We were smashed at the contest today except in the second quarter. Accuracy just made it a 50 point thrashing instead of maybe a 30 point caning.
Petracca and Oliver too big and too strong for our midfield/followers today. Are we missing one bigger JPK/Hewett type player in the midfield?
Rowy has started season slowly too which isn't helping.

I did see the Dee's controlling the game and then a fair dismantle leading into 3tr time thru to the last qtr
Work to do
Geelong showed their superior defence in the GF was too much to handle and the Dee's showed that today as well as much faster on the spread / breaks."be tough, only when it gets tough"

Was a mixture of our own inadequacies and the umpire's many frees against us. The fact they were allowed to throw and drop the ball when tackled all day but we get pinned for incorrect disposal. Absolutely wrong.
But we were not good enough. We gave them a 5 goal head start. Didn't bother turning up in the first. decided to bomb it to Bud. We again used Bud far too much and paid for it. Cunningham was in the centre corridor all alone when Heeney got the ball around the centre and he tried to hit Bud on a lead that was never going to work. A lot of stupid decisions made today. The balls coming out of the centre were just long bombs which were mostly easily picked off.
Ladhams is a two edged sword. On the one hand he can be brilliant and then he does the easy things, like a short pass, so badly and turns it over. His decision making and execution at times is woeful. Stephens was terrible today. Absolutely toweled up by Langdon. Simply couldn't keep up with him. Not only that he gave him more room the a Trump Mansion. Very disappointing. When he did get the ball his delivery was shocking. ramps looked slow on several occasions today. he was killed today. he gave away far too many goals. their smalls got hold of our small backs and destroyed them. Rampe, Lloyd, Campbell, Florent etc were beaten today.
Our forwards and mids were not working hard enough on turnover as they managed to transition easily. Someone really needs to give Harrison Petty a big old fashioned shirtfront. The guy is a thug and deserves to be treated as one. Next week I want to see Will Gould in that backline. I don't care who goes out, just get him in. He's got grunt, knows how to throw his weight around legally. Ollie tried hard, so did Blakey. Errol was good. Many players tried hard. But there were just too many factors against us. Like 50 metre penalties are free kicks for dissent. Free kicks all up and man that should have been paid to us that weren't.
While on the umpires. Since there is not Head of Footy the umpiring has been a mess. No consistency at all. The throw is now officially legal as they only penalise non Vic clubs. Who the effing knows what is dissent and what isn't. There are 36 different interpretations being used. Why does the AFL not admit the umpiring is a problem. They obviously thought it was otherwise we would not have 4 umpies instead 3. It hasn't made a lot of different really the umpiring is still the same amateurish @@@@e it has been for years. In fact, it's worse because they are not even consistent in the same game. Will a new Head of Football help? Probably not, because you will get the same lickspittles applying for the job. Nobody that actually knows anything about football wants to work for the AFL. Because it is a private schoolboy's club.
I am almost at the stage where I simply just don't care anymore. I am thinking of never looking at this sport again because of the @@@@e administration of the game and the tainting of the product by design. If you think the amount of throws and dropped ball let go is not by design and the way those in at AFL Headquarters want the game then you are deluded. They all went to Private Schools so they would have played quite a lot of Union. This looks much like Union on a far bigger field now.Comment

There are always going to be games when the other side kicks straight for goal and we don't. It's the nature of the game.
I think we play better without Franklin and we won't improve until he's out of the side. I thought Amartey was excellent, except for his goal kicking, which is usually pretty good. We should consider bringing Sheldrick into the side to help with our contested possessions.
It's was a big score against us, but there's still plenty to like about the way we play and despite to big margin, we are still heading in the right direction.Comment

I didn’t think we were too bad till three quarter time, and the fact if Blakey had kicked that goal on the run in the third we would have been back to a point, shows that.
But, the last quarter was disappointing. And our midfield was generally poor. A couple like Stephens and Warner, so good the first two weeks, were right off today, and we continue to have a contested ball problem. I think one of the commentators picked this up too - and that is, we were very dependent on our kicking skills, and bar a couple of bursts of play, lacked overlap.
A couple of other observations: I’d disagree with others that said we were too Buddy focused. I thought both Amartey and Logan had good moments, and I thought our mid sized forwards in Hayward and Heeney were well down on their usual marking prowess if we are looking for issues forward of the ball to fix.
And by the way, when we’ve got a chain of handballs finally going, do NOT use the ruckman as the one who’ll then be the release kick. No knock on Ladhams, but we need to find better choices.
And agree with above. The ump’s focus on minor infringements versus obvious incorrect disposals or HTB sends supporters mad. It wasn’t about bias today, but incompetence.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

Yes, it's a dreadful loss and you can blame several factors. One being the coaching and selection staff. They picked a really fast side and we did not match it. If we give up these sorts of scores to one team other teams are going to learn from this and it becomes a habit. By the way I think it is time for the Gould train.Comment

If he was knocking the door down hard, I get it. But he isn't at all at the moment for mine.

Well Said @wolftones-
I don't know- I think the AFL like to run a narrative because the game is all about money/betting nowadays. I think the narrative favours Melbourne clubs and let's face it, it's still the VFL after all these years. The Swans have to be competitive because the Giants have been a bit of a glorious failure, and they need Sydney to be able to maintain the 'A' in AFL and to drive up the TV rights price. I enjoy the game, but every year I have to stop myself getting too invested because I don't think the Swans get a fair go. So I'll do what I do every year, go to the SCG , see a few games, have some good nights and then watch the other games on TV casually. I've been a member over 20 years now and I consider myself a Swans fan not an AFL fan.Comment

That was a right old shellacking. I watched a bit of the Hawks game during the week and thought that really wasn't the perfect preparation for a high pressure game, and thus it proved to be.
They were way too strong and way too structured for us, Petracca and Oliver are all class. Even so, -30 contested possessions is a dismal showing.
Loved the Bud's game bar his set shot kicking and loved our fight back bar the goal kicking but not much to enthuse about otherwise.
I agree that Harrison Petty's approach to driving the marker into the ground seems from a bygone era - I thought that sort of crap was meant to be ironed out? Seeing the nonsense things we were penalised 50m for and he didn't get anything for his several gutless efforts was terrifically frustrating. And speaking of nostalgia, I haven't seen that many throw go unpenalised since the 2016 GF - staggering.
But we've got some work to do no doubt - will need to regroup and reset for Port.Comment

I thought we were the better side from the beginning of the second quarter to mid way through the third. We got within single figures but they broke our hearts with outstanding kicking for goal whereas we couldn't capitalise on our chances. However, they just ran over us in the last 40 minutes. We were trying to take a lot of risks to make up the margin but some bad turnovers really hurt and they were good enough to take advantage. Having only one midfielder get 20+ possessions is not good enough. The Chad has been down on form, Gulden had his least impactful game, and RB has lost most of his offence.
However, I don't think it's a disaster game. The scoreline still flatters them. They are a very good side too. I was really impressed with some of their younger players. They play their roles well and will be right at the pointy end again this year.Comment

From what I've heard the reserves were bog average all round today which is a bit of a concern as there doesn't seem to be a lot of selection pressure coming from there!
Happy to hear otherwise from anyone who saw the game today.

Completely agree. He’s been a shadow of himself since he was cleaned up in the final against Melbourne last year.
We went into the game without much preparation for a hard, contested match, something which worried me through the week, and so it happened. We still created plenty of chances, but didn’t capitalise, and we were thoroughly flogged in the contested possessions subsequently.
Plenty to work on, and hopefully a wake up call after two relatively easy matches to open.
