I think it’s fair to say we were redlining when we got to the GF last year, (Reid’s injury was a killer blow combined with Ladhams suspension meant Hickey didn’t get a rest in the run in) and 2016 we were hit with injuries (Aliir the big one but McVeigh and Mills played Injured) as well as the umpires.
But in contrast we had a dream run in 2014 and managed to implode as well.He ate more cheese, than time allowedComment

We've been a free agency/trading dead zone since Buddy arrived, if he does come off the books then maybe finally this off season the Swans get active prediction will finally come true.Comment

Horse has been amazing but it would be nice if he was able to adapt a bit more when things aren’t going well.
Heeney needs to be full time in the midfield. We have Buddy, Logan, McLean, Papley and Hayward so plenty of targets. By midfield, that means centre bounce, not a wing.
Mills should never play back again no matter how short we are. Pick someone else there.
Give Hayward a run in the middle at times. Get him involved.
If playing Sheldrick, give him a run as an inside mid for a bit, not just stuck on a half forward flank.
Above all, do some of these things early, not when the game is over.Comment

Agreed with all of the above except Heeney. He is a natural forward and one of the hardest to match up on. Forwards are the main ones to hit the scoreboard and we need heaps of shots at goal as we miss so many????Horse has been amazing but it would be nice if he was able to adapt a bit more when things aren’t going well.

But seriously, we have enough midfielders though I’m all for Heeney and Paps to have a run there just to vary it up. Both should spend 90% of their time up forward though and kick goals- that’s their job!
As for Wilbur- he’s an enigma: hot or cold. But I can’t see him in midfield. Maybe Ollie for a spell there and Wilbur HB?
Don’t know, but Horse could shuffle the deck a bit more for sure when things are not going well.Comment

Some interesting points. One I might add was the tough Melbourne final . Some Melbourne players commented that it was the toughest game of football they had ever played in . They then when out in straight sets. We hit the ground running against Collingwood and then absolutely hit a brick wall and scraped into the GF . We were absolutely cooked and sitting ducks in the final .You appear to overlook the circumstances of the route to the 2022 Grand Final taken by the Swans and Geelong.
Geelong were near or at the top of the ladder for most of the season. They always appeared near certainties to finish in the top four. This allowed them to tailor the training programs of crucial players (eg Dangerfield) to be at their peak at or near GF day. In addition, aided by their midfield depth, they limited the on-field time of their midfield players during the home-and-away portion of the season.
In contrast, the Swans lost badly to Essendon late in the season. That loss raised the very real possibility that the Swans wouldn't make the eight and meant that the team had to play like men possessed in the final half dozen home-and-away games. During that period the Swans put their best team on the park each week and I would guess that no consideration was given to limiting the playing time of midfielders.
Another major factor was the timing of when the two teams played Collingwood. Geelong played Collingwood in the first week of the finals and barely survived the experience. They then had a week to recover. The Swans played Collingwood in a Preliminary final and also barely survived the experience. However, they were then obliged to face Geelong a week later and they played like an exhausted team.
Longmire had little/no control regarding the above circumstances. He should be congratulated on taking the Swans to the Grand Final.

My biggest issue is we don’t role enough players through the middle . Our midfielders work so hard to help in defence , Gulden, Warner and Mills done a lot of this on Sunday . Pretty much all cooked by the last qtr and all had minimal impact .
Interesting stats from our CBA’s on the weekend I have not added ruckman
Parker 95%
Warner 79%
Rowbottom 26%
Mills 63%
Papley 26%
Heeney 11%
Interestingly Gulden didn’t attend any CBA’s this round
Other than these players the only others to get a run in the middle have been Stephens 8% against the Hawks
Sheldrick 3% against GWS and Roberts 14% against Gold Coast
We simply don’t run deep enough in my opinion

Parker 95% is surely too high and Rowie at 26% is too low! Mills shouldn’t have to play back, unless the last 10 minutes or so if a game needs to be seen off- but my preference is never! Paps and Heeney is about right but we do need 1 more to share the load! We’ve certainly gone heavy in our last few drafts for mids so let’s bring them in!My biggest issue is we don’t role enough players through the middle . In fairness, they’ve been hit by injuries, like our defenders????Comment

Just some facts on Heeney. Last year he was our best one on one players with winning 45%. This year his one on one victories stands at 12%. Surely he is carrying an injury. Wilbur in the mid field?? That must be a joke. He has a very small engine and that is why he flashes in and out of games.Agreed with all of the above except Heeney. An excellent post, AppleCore, which shows a lot of insight and appreciation of what transpired last year. Clearly it is also impacting this season, with so many injuries and underdone players. Heeney is certainly carrying an injury, he’s been a shadow of himself since May cleaned him up in the final. At the time I was thinking fractured maxilla, and he’s nowhere near fit now, either. You appear to overlook the circumstances of the route to the 2022 Grand Final taken by the Swans and Geelong.

We started the season behind the 8-ball and things have gone downhill from there, with so many additional injuries to key players. But we’ll be back; the nucleus of an outstanding squad still exists.

This is one of the best posts I've read to sum up our eventual demise last year....well considered, intelligent and mature. Longmire bashers would do well to read it over and over instead of throwing toys from the cot and taking cheap shots at our coach. You appear to overlook the circumstances of the route to the 2022 Grand Final taken by the Swans and Geelong.

Lots of tantrums of late after our losses...childish stuff.Comment

Spot on crackedactor- like I said in another thread, Heeney is carrying an injury for sure. He is too talented for his form to drop off like it has: maybe for 1 or 2 games but he has hardly had a top game this year. He needs a rest!Just some facts on Heeney. With Wicks injured, we could have used James Bell right about now. His output at forward is not that much worse than Heeney's has been this year, at least it would let us rest Heeney.Comment

Please no , Bell tried his heart out but was simply not up to AFL standard .
