Swans chat Round 8 v Pies at the MCG, 3.20pm Sunday 7 May (pre-game thread)

I thought I'd kick this off as I just read the latest injury update, which is pretty transparent as to availability.

It sounds like Fox may be available this week, but no Rampe before the bye.

Melican in the VFL this coming weekend and Wicks possibly the next weekend.

Everyone else (Amartey, Roberts, Reid) is longer-term, though Reid is apparently running now.

Why does the injury report not have an update on Hickey?

    For me:

Ins: Fox if fit, Hickey if fit
    Outs: Gus, and McClean
    Sub: Gus for Sheather

Think we need to keep Clarke to tag Daicos Jnr

They have a lot of height around the ground, even without their rucks. Moore, Frampton, McStay, Mihocek, Pendleberry and Crisp are all 190 cm plus. Maynard though only 186 cm is a also big unit. Crisp is a big unit too, so hope we don't get outmuscled again.

Perhaps (hopefully) because he's no longer listed as injured? He got through the R5 VFL game "without issues".

Aside from McInerney, whose injury and recovery time was not confirmed in this week's formal injury report:

          And the mysteriously missing Mitchell.

I arrived at the SCG precint a few hours before Saturday's game to attend a function. The VFL squad was out training on Lakeside Oval. I only watched for a couple of minutes as it was raining, but I did see Mitchell and Fox both running the boundary at a decent pace. Amartey was also out there, in training gear, but not doing much during the short time I was watching.

Interesting that 7 of those guys are in our best 23. Leaves a big hole to have third of your team out.

Pies have a big injury list too it seems, though not as bad as ours. They have Cameron, Cox, Howe, Lipinski and McStay out as first 22.

I’m not convinced about the Clarke tag anymore, but reckon Horse will try it anyway. Happy to be proven wrong.

Surely time for Hickey to return at McLean’s expense. Fox is a good in too.

I’m fearful we’ll get slaughtered, but hopeful we’ll be up for the contest and it will be close.

I can’t remember us ever having so many talls injured at once

I read somewhere that Mitchell had glandular fever.

I agree with this, not that we have many options atm & fingers crossed for both Fox and Hickey. Fox on DeGoey?

Dane has been a huge out being the defence general and would have helped Gould settle in more into the senior team. May need to call on Lewis Melican if his VFL form warrant and need his height.

Whilst our injury list has been an issue with our performance, can't help think how well St.Kilda started off the season with their long injury list. Shows how much confidence and belief between the ears plays a part.

Collingwood plays a very high pressure game consistently above the elite 200 level. Which we'll need to match as we were also consistently doing last year.

P.S. Showers is forecast for Melbourne for rest of the week including Sunday, with Thursday being the only exception. Had lots of overnight rain down my way in Melbourne SE. This may influence selection, particularly with Hickey's potential return. Heard a media report suggest he is likely to play another week in the VFL.

Champion Data's Daniel Hoyne via SEN says:

"Collingwood hosts the struggling Sydney on the MCG on Sunday afternoon and will look to maintain their one-game lead on top of the ladder.

Hoyne sees the Swans as a “sneaky chance” to take down the Magpies.

It's the sort of game that we have often won in the past. Maybe we'll have a day out up forward where we rarely miss. Our 3 and 4 record has brought a lot of angst and in depth analysis on this site but Champion Data nails the main cause. GWS benefited last game and also in 2021 finals series
Still get stressed when I think of that game.

Hickey in the wet is better then Mclean in the dry

Mills in the mids and stay there
All this crap about helping out down back, our mids are all available so lets win the part of the ground that matters most

Couldnt imagine Danger, Petracca, Oliver, Brayshaw etc etc dropping back to HBF or Full back if those teams backline was decimated.

Wasting the midfield talent that is Mills, hands down our most solid contributor when Longmire isnt tagging him

Those blokes have never played in defence.
