Team List Rnd 9 - Pre Match List - vs Fremantle at SCG at 1:45 PM, Saturday 13 May 2023

Time for a much needed win!

Outs: Sheather (Inj), Cunningham/Clarke, Francis (Sub)
Ins: Hickey, Stephens, Cunningham/Clarke as sub

I think we should play two Rucks - Jackson just had his best game for Fremantle and they have Darcy as well. Stephens on Serong to prove we made the right pick!

Alternate out is McLean and we stick Francis into the backline.

    Thoughts?

Must win if we want to keep our season alive in terms of playing finals.

Hickey surely is an in. I'd bring him in for McLean (which would be harsh after his best game for the year), but could be a straight swap Ladhams.

Other than that, not sure what other changes might be in the offering. I don't see what Francis offers up forward however.

He did take the best two contested marks in our forward line yesterday. And the worse of the two missed conversions was still only the second worst miss of the afternoon (after Ladhams on half-time).

Ladhams has ability and athleticism but I'm not sure if the mental side of his game will ever be up to scratch. Just about every game he has played this year has produced a couple of howlers. Hope I'm wrong.

Aaron has impressed me with his ability to read the ball in the air both in the forward and backline. I feel for him with some of his misses on goal (across a couple of games), I seem to recall him as a relatively skillful chap at Essendon.

Seems like a little bit of a bundle of nerves out there.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

I thought Francis could be a good #2 forward, replacing both Buddy and McLean. I agree that he reads the ball well and can take a mark. But he has to kick those goals. He's a bit of a liability defensively due to his lack of speed. He's easy to run off. So the rest of his game has to be to shelf if he wants to hold a spot in the side.

I think we should drop Buddy this game on form, but with the booing incident, it might look as though he was dropped due to the booing. Making him the sub would resolve that issue.

His marking ability is decent. His kicking for goal leaves a lot to be desired. I haven't seen a whole heap of the reserves this season, but it isn't like he has been kicking bags their either.

Would not mind seeing him given a chance down back however.

Attended the game and it was played at a high intensity, I think we really held the pies for 3 quarters but our woeful kicking didn’t give us a chance

It’s probably the best game we’ve played for weeks with plenty of positives and not a lot of negatives (result aside).

Great game from Errol Fox McClean Logan Lloyd Chad (except last quarter) Clarke and plenty more.

The negatives were our kicking at goal, our delivery into the forward line, the umpires, Buddy is a shell of the player he used to be, the use of Francis as the sub (which is a criticism of the coaches not the player), and Sheather looked well out of his depth in the short amount of time he played

3 extremely winnable games before the bye, if we can’t go 3 and 0 we might as well start tanking the season

Thought Sheather looked ok. Francis looked the only guy up forward likely to take a mark.
If he'd kicked straight, things may have been different.

Feels like a while since Freo came to the SCG and indeed it is: 2018, when the Swans won 111-52.

If my sums are right the SCG Win-Loss-Draw record is 13-4-1.

Not that I think these records count for much, other than that there is significant home ground advantage when the opponent travels that distance. Only 11 Swans players from that 2018 game still on the list, and I don't know how many from Freo.

Heard that Ladhams couldn’t feel his hand when missed the goal. Affected ball drop.

That makes sense. From the footage of him sitting on the bench rubbing his arm and talking to the doctor, it was clear his arm was really troubling him.

I think we have to persevere with Francis- he needs a run of games to gain confidence which makes a huge difference when kicking for goal. Plus he can be swung to defence when needed, though as some said he is a bit slow, but as he reads the play well, this may still work.

Otherwise, why on earth did we recruit him? Surely not for the VFL!????

Francis speed is surely on par with Paddy who we need to replace in defence, reckon he is best suited back there, especially if we play Hickey with Ladhams.

Our fwd line shortcomings are exaggerated by our kicking for goal.

Buddy wont get dropped, he is with us for the year, just needs to be utilised and told to play within himself.

Clarke is required for Frederick I reckon and he has been good.

If Hickey plays they wont drop Mclean, id say Francis stays sub.
Be good to see if Mclean can run with Jackson

                            Stephens for Sheather
                            Hickey for Cunningham

Francis surely must go. Isn’t up to it.

Stephens and Hickey in for Sheather and Francis. Gus Sheldrick as the sun.

Cunningham butchers the ball but is important defensively so must stay.
