I'm not in favour of this at all. We play 23 rounds to qualify for the top 8. If we don't make it then too bad.

Apparently it's based on what happens in the NBA. Why do we have to follow what the US does??
I think there's two main reasons. One: AFL executives have to justify their fact finding missions to America. Two: copying American ideas, spares them the onerous task of coming up with their own ideas.

Since the 2016 umpiring has come up, I thought I'd post a link to this 'best of', that somebody put up on YouTube. But be warned, viewing might require a strong stomach.

Free Kick Bulldogs | 2016 AFL Grand Final - YouTube

It's hard to work out which decision is the most egregious? The unpenalised taking out of Hanners is a strong contender. As are the two decisions against Rampe. But perhaps my personal favourite, is when a Bulldogs player clatters into his own team mate and then receives a high contact free.

The taking out of Hanners was right in front of us. Removed an All Australian player from the game with most of the last quarter to go, and Dan was never the same player afterwards. Truly a despicable act, and given it was attempted on various Swans players during the match, I have often wondered if it was a deliberate tactic to stop our run.

I don't mind the wildcard weekend.
Surprise, suprise the teams sitting 6th to 8th have come out against it (since they have most to lose). Eg. Essendon..

Imagine it this year. The teams on 36 points would feel more comfortable, because they only have to finish 10th to make finals, so less excitement for them.

The excitement comes from teams like us, GC, Freo who now have a good chance of nabbing 10th spot.
And the team 5th and 6th to try and stay above the dreaded wildcard round.

Ridiculous concept. The team lying seventh may have won three or four more games than tenth. Why should they have to ‘forfeit’ those hard fought wins and requalify for the finals?
My view is, if it’s associated with American sport than avoid it like the plague as it will have one aim only and that revolves around the mighty dollar without giving a stuff around fairness.
Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.

Big cat, the teams finishing 7th and 8th are not premiership contenders and anomalies in the fixture means anyone's ladder position is +/- 2 off real H&A form.

Take GWS. They are the only team to lose to west coast. How I don't know but if they had been WC they would be 5th right now.

And yet they also beat Geelong. In Geelong.

Form, confidence, player availability, opposition player availability, vagaries of the fixture - all these things conspire to make the ladder an approximation of the innate quality of a team. By having any kind of finals series we are saying that the ultimate reward is not given for performance across the entire season - as it is in the European soccer leagues - but rather for peak performance in September.

If one is going to argue that 9th and 10th can never have a right to challenge 7th and 8th, one could just as well argue that 7th and 8th don’t have any right to challenge the top four. Certainly this season there is a far bigger gap in performance between the top three and the rest than there is between 5th and 15th.

If we go to 19 or 20 teams, this is a way of introducing a pseudo top 10.

It’s been a top 8 since 1994 when there were 16 teams (before GWS and Gold Coast were created and before Port Adelaide took Fitzroy’ spot).

Makes sense to expand to a top 9 or 10 given the extra teams added in the last almost 30 years plus Tasmania.

I think GWS right now are a testament to the importance of keeping almost everyone on the park, and with that the
competition for their spots every week. I think I'm with Chris Scott the comp is uneven enough already.
Bring in Tasmania. 18 round season and start charging people more to go to games to pay for the loss of four
rounds. It's ridiculously cheap compared to other comparable sports. No wonder the clubs are all broke or close
                        to it.

We play the Giants soon. Should we enter a gentlemans agreement with them, that we will throw the game to give them the best chance of making finals, on the condition they would do the same for us in the future.
Let's call it the 'sydney allienace'.

Are you off your rocker? Throw the game? To the Giants of all teams? You're making me laugh because you have to be taking the @#$&.
