Please, for the love of God, do not name the premiership cup, the barrasi cup.

Knee jerk reaction, and gary Lyon carrying on like a pork chop doesn't help

We already have the 'barassi line'.

Not exactly a compelling case. Barassi is the most consequential figure in the history of the game, and few would dispute that claim.

We have attached names to the awards for the premiership coach and the best player in the Grand Final. Jock McHale and Norm Smith were huge figures, but Barassi surpassed even them.

What makes him an even more appropriate choice is that he was always an advocate for expanding the game's frontiers, first into Ireland and then into the states that had not experienced its superior qualities. And finally, he represented four clubs during the course of his playing and coaching careers.

I can think of no more suitable candidate, and I see no obvious reason for leaving the cup without a name.

I think the AFL are considering the idea of giving the premiership cup a name very seriously. And they should, it's a big deal.
RB's record as a player (6 flags) and a coach (4 flags) is incredible. As B05 says above Barassi spoke out about things we all
basically agree on now. And as a Swans supporter who sat thru all those games when he was our coach and even though
we lost most of them, I always felt with him there we were on an upward path. And clearly we were. If they are going to
give the cup a name then its very hard to look past RB. He ticks every box.

Just give the decision due diligence, not the emotion of his recent death.

Why not the Michael tuck cup?
Michael Tuck holds the club record for the most senior games (426), most finals (39), most grand finals (11) and most premierships (7).

Unlike barassi, a one club loyalty which some value highly.

Emotion. Don't trust it. Keep it well out of the way.

As long as they don't flog off the naming rights to the premiership cup to the company with the most cash. Being forced to call it the SPONSOR'S NAME Cup would be crass. I refuse to use such names as a matter of principle.

I would have no problem naming the cup the Barassi Cup. Not straight away though. Such a change should take place from next season, IMO.

Absolutely with you on that. I can't believe how craven footy supporters have been in rolling over to corporate interests on naming rights. Why do people call Docklands Marvel? Or Colonial, or whatever the sponsor du jour tells them to call it? What kind of Geelong supporter calls Kardinia Park GMHBA Stadium? Even Ikon Park FFS. Yes Carlton don't play there any more, but how can any Carlton supporter use that name? Does anyone call it the Toyota Grand Final?

I mean, let them shovel their money into the AFL, let them plaster their ads from one end of the ground to the other, but do people really have to buy into it?

There has been no one in the history of the game whose had a greater influence on the game.....it is far from a knee jerk reaction. It actually makes sense.....something you could work on barry.

WTF barry, you've just been arguing for over a day on the 'Finals series' thread how stupid and rigid one club loyalty is.

If you can't/won't make sense, at least be consistent.
