That game was telecast but my brother tried everywhere to get a copy but apparently it wasn't in the CH7 archives. Teaser took I think 21 marks and tore Len Thompson apart.
Back in the 60's there was great excitement when a country ruckman by the name of Fred Way finally agreed to come and play with South. Fred was a pretty handy ruckman who started with us in 1964, went back to Berrigan in 1965, came back to us in 1966, then back to Berrigan in 1967 and !968 and returned to us for 1969,70 and 71. He represented Victoria in 1969. So a pretty handy player. He would drive his truck to Melbourne the night before a game, unloaded his truck and stayed with Norm Smith overnight. He would get up in the morning, load up the truck, play the game then drive back to Berrigan. You often wonder how good these players would be if they played now.Comment

Entire 2nd quarter South Melbourne v Richmond R3 1977 at Lakeside Oval. Great re-living memories of our former home ground, but OMG we got so reamed by the umpires! I would've been an angry young teen watching this!
Famous names in both teams.
i remember South had a strong start to the season winning the first 2 games to earn rare appearance on Ch 7 Footy Replay that Saturday night. This was in the days of no live VFL footy in Melbourne and all 6 games (12 team comp) played on a Saturday afternoon. Radio was king.
South ended up making the Finals (5th - top 5) for only the 2nd time since 1945 and last before being relocated to Sydney 5 years later. We met Richmond again In the EF at VFL Park, who sadly knocked us out. Teaser won the Brownlow after being moved from FF into the Ruck (he'd kicked 17 goals after the first 2 rounds).
Edit: We haven't played Richmond in a final since! Longest finals drought against all teams presently in comp except for GC.

So, obviously a quality side, but still plenty of room for discussion and to perhaps push personal favourites. Possibly the most surprising selection for me is Jason Ball as first ruck? Jolly, Mumford and Pyke all seem to have better records as Swans. And if there's a bit of extra weight given to grand final performances, then I'd probably go for Pyke. Or maybe you could get a bit creative and have Goodes as ruckman, with Hall giving a chop out, so you could squeeze Kirk into the midfield?Last edited by liz; 3 February 2025, 08:02 AM. Wow that is a tough assignment picking our TOC so far, which reflects the quality of depth & finals success club has achieved. Luke Parker as sub looks unders, but who does he replace?. I"d also add Callum Mills, Nick Blakey (128 games), Lewis Jetta & Marty Mattner to the long list of players stiff to miss out.
Ist Riuck is interesting, but can see merit of Jason Ball. Mummy would be close but his 2012 GF performance (played injured) is a X against him. He seemed to have flourished further with his enforcer reputation at GWS.

Yes, with three Skilton Medals, you'd think that Parker would make the starting side. And by the same logic, I tend to think that two Skilton Medals means that perennially underrated Lloyd should be in the side. Possibly at the expense of Malceski or Crouch? I suspect that Malceski is being marked up a bit, for his two grand final goals?

Final Quarter R16 1973 St Kilda v South Melbourne at Moorabbin. The game was umpired so differently back then!
Look out for Peter Bedford magic (my childhood hero). Great to see & hear great South players of that era.

Without wanting to hijack the List Management thread further, which morphed from the midseason draft to Cressa.
IIRC, the last 2 goals of the 96 PF was kicked by Dale Lewis & Cressa, who ironically were our best midseason draft pickups, as previously mentioned in the other tthread. Soon after Wade Chapman calmly weighted that beautiful pass to Plugger, who kicked that famous after the siren point from outside 50 (with dodgy groins) & into our first GF in 51 years!
The crowd and player pandanomium which followed, is the best ii've ever seen. Period. (with bias). I wished in hindsight that i'd also flew up for that game after doing so for the QF. Just wondering if anyone here attended that 96 PF?
Our 96 finals series is a bit underrated, overshadowed by the awesome 2005 finals series as we went one step further to claim our first flag in 72 years. I think Cressa may also be a bit underrated today, though he made the TOC.
I still have my photos taken of the 96 QF & GF ( on print in photo album). Remember having to pinch myself & thinking i'm in a dream as i entered the MCG on GF day, as i thought i'd never see us play in a GF. It was only 3 years earlier in 93 that the club almost folded!!!
Wasn't expecting us to win & just happy to be there. But i remember when we opened up a 4 goal lead in the 2nd qtr, i suddenly felt so light headed as the prospect of us winning a flag seemed likely and i was like in some sort of shock. Then i recall that Paul Kelly pass which just fell short of Plugger, which would've put us 5 goals in front!.
It all changed quickly after that, being overrun in the 2nd half wilth Glenn Freeborn coming on & doing a Teddy Hopkins. The previous 2 hard contested finals had taken it's toll, as it was later revealed that many players had played sore carrying soft tissue injuries.
Recall going to the club wake after the match, at the Glass House (now Collingwood training centre). Troy Luff got the biggest cheer as each player were introduced, as this is probably where his cult status began?
Went home feeling gutted, which unfortunately i would experience many times again, being so lucky to have attended every GF since. Since 96, the club has been successful and looking back at my entire life as a Swans supporter from young as i can remember (in the 60's), the ledger is now falling on the positive side with a healthy percentage! GO BLOODS!!!!

Constant breaches of the rules will result in your access to RWO being reduced as the Moderator / Administrator group see fit. RWO uses the vBulletin Infraction System to deal with breaches of the RWO rules. All Infractions have an expiry date. Such an expiry date may be as short as 10 days or as long as 6 months. Multiple infractions, depending on the number of points a member accumulates, WILL result in temporary bans from the site and CAN result in a permanent ban. Please note that some Infractions have an expiry date of "Never" and WILL result in the RWO member being banned from the site immediately.
1) Signatures / Avatars
Keep signatures under 4 lines of standard sized fonts (if you must use large fonts, use just one line) as a courtesy to all users who read the forums.
Do not use signatures / avatars as an opportunity to make jibes at other forum members. This will be considered to be sniping (refer Rule 6 below). You may not refer to another RWO forum member, or quote anything they have written, without permission from that member. Using an anonymous tag does not make it acceptable. If quotes are not removed, we reserve the right to remove them, without notification. If in doubt as to whether something is acceptable or not, don't use it!
2) Spamming
Advertising for personal commercial purposes is NOT permitted. Placing links to sites that other users may find of interest / personal websites is acceptable within reason (ie constantly posting links will be frowned upon).
3) Deliberately avoiding the RWO swear filter
RWO is a site that is accessible by Swans supporters of all ages and walks of life. A swear filter is in place to mask offensive words and phrases. This swear filter contains offensive words and variant spellings of offensive words to stop you from deliberately avoiding the swear filter. Do not attempt to avoid the swear filter through alternate spelling of offensive words. Do not attempt to avoid the swear filter by devising systems to fool the swear filter in its recognition of offensive words.
4) Inappropriate Language / Excessive swearing
RWO is a site that is accessible by Swans supporters of all ages and walks of life. Moderators will let some minor cases through. Anything deemed to be of poor taste or of an offensive nature may be removed at moderator discretion. Consider all members when posting; what you think is funny, not all members will feel the same way.
5) Trolling / Baiting
Deliberately posting on threads in an attempt to stir / bait other RWO users will not be tolerated.
6) Flaming / Sniping / Abuse / Insulting other members
If you have to have a go at someone personally, take it off the boards. Everyone else doesn't need to see your hissy fits. Remember, "Play the ball, not the man". This includes spouses or partners. If you don''t like a post, don't flame, snipe, abuse or insult in response - it makes the job of moderation much harder. Report the post through the forum reporting mechanism (click on the Triangle with the exclamation mark) and let the Moderator / Administrator group deal with it.
7) Legal issuesa) The Moderator / Administrator group will keep a very close eye on threads discussing rumours or anything that could be potentially libellous. Moderators and Administrators are not interested in the chance of legal action regardless of how small - if deemed that there is ANY threat to RWO potentially, we will come down hard on it.
b) Due to potential issues of copyright infringement and the potential legal implications, posting of complete articles is NOT permitted. If necessary, post a link to the article. Where appropriate, you may quote sections of the article to aid in discussion.
c) Due to potential issues of copyright infringement and potential legal implications, posting of links to "live streaming (of AFL games)" and "AFL content" sites that are not AFL endorsed is NOT permitted. Posts with such links will be removed immediately and infraction points will be issued.
d) Freedom of speech does NOT = freedom to slander
8) Racial / Sexual Discrimination / Villification
It is not acceptable for members to engage in racial and/or sexual discrimination / villification. It is not acceptable for members to use terminology in describing race or gender in a derogatory manner. Discussing and disputing the views and opinions of other posters is acceptable. Personally vilifying or abusing others for having certain characteristics, or being a member of a certain group (or because you think they're a member of a certain group), is not. This rule shall apply to any post attacking race, skin colour, ethnic background, gender and sexuality.

9) Prohibited
Anything deemed to be of Adult content or porn related nature will be removed immediately. Selling or offering of drugs, drug references, other than those openly discussed and identified in the press, will also be removed immediately. Breaches of this rule carry the highest infraction points and may result in permanent bans on a first offence.
10) Off-topic Posts
Some members prefer to just read Swans or footy related posts. This is, after all, a SSFC website. Ensure you post threads in the appropriate forum, or they will be moved. While threads will sometimes move away from the original topic, do not deliberately drag a thread away from its original subject.
11) Attachments
Attachments within the size limit prescribed are permitted. However, due to costs associated with uploads/downloads, if you wish to attach a number of files within a thread, or feel that the quality of the attachment is compromised by the file size restrictions, you may wish to use external hosting providers and link to the files there.
12) Moderator / Administrator Group
The Moderator / Administrator group reserve the right to delete or move threads / posts as well as remove signatures / avatars as necessary according to the rules of the RWO forum.
13) Final decisions
Any decisions made around the intepretation of the rules above are entirely at the discretion of the site administrators. Such decisions are final.
14) Vistitors from other sites
You are most welcome to join in discussions on RWO, but remember, you are a GUEST on our site. Abide by the RWO Forum Rules or we WILL ban you.
