“That’s certainly the plan”: New AFL season opener set for 2024

Here's confirmation, via the Giants' CEO, Dave Matthews, that the idea of the two Sydney teams opening the 2024 AFL season is further advanced than a mere thought bubble.

However, it's occurred to me that we rarely get to play round 1 at home, even with the traditional end-of-March season start, due to the lack of availability of the SCG. I hope they don't think they're giving us an even earlier home start (with the season already shifted forward to accommodate Gather Round) and then shuffling us off to Homebush.

Would you bet that the AFL didn't simply neglect to check on the availability of the SCG for round 1 next season?

It would be an honour to play at the grand old lady of Australian sport.

They are talking about GWS v Collingwood too. And with a good bit of promotion, that might need Homebush too.

          Maybe it's a double header...

Maybe it will be. Domestic cricket seems to be shifting more and more to smaller grounds, so in the unlikely event of NSW going deep into the Sheffield Shield, maybe they won't need to reserve the SCG.

One person who'd have a good idea of its availability is the chairman of the SCG Trust (who also happens to be chairman of the Giants). I bet the Giants would love it if the Swans were forced into playing a home game away from the SCG.

It would mean we have two byes for the season.....and we know our post bye form in general.
Split round 1 over two weeks and be done with it.

While we're on the topic of split rounds, split round 13 and have all the byes over two weeks. Having byes spread over a month in four separate rounds was a bad decision. That's a full month where teams have not played the same number of games at the end of a round.

I guess the SCG is available next March.

Sydney’s Opening Night for season 2024

It's being billed as the opener for the official "150 years" celebrations.

I am looking forward to seeing the players run out to celebrate 150 years, in the colours we've been wearing for 157 years.

A bit of angst here in Melbourne about Round 1, 2024 featuring 4 games only and - shock, horror - none of those games are in Melbourne!

A lot of people still don't seem to know what the A in AFL stands for.

Yep, the whinging here has been ridiculous. How dare a Victorian team be made to travel Round 1!

                        The fixture is now out:

AFL Fixtures and Results - AFL.com.au

Decent looking draw, but some tough double ups as to be expected. No new or interesting grounds with the exception of Mt Barker during AFL sponsored massive profit gouging weekend aka Gather Round.

Can't say I'm overly keen on the 4pm starts on Sunday afternoons for MCG games either. Probably still just doable as a return day trip from Canberra, but making it quite tight for last flights. Small matter I know haha.

Handed a fixture that is rated 3rd hardest behind Collingwood and Brisbane.

Not much room for error if teams hold their 2023 form.

Pretty brutal draw for a team that came 8th

Strange how we don't get St Kilda early in the season.

Sydney plays Adelaide twice in a season for the first time since 2005.
