If you want to be the best, first you have to beat the best.

The AFL is giving us plenty of opportunities to do that.

If we're good enough, we will beat anyone, anywhere.

And if not? We will get better draft picks in 2024 due to the hard fixture.

I like that we play at the MCG a few times early on. The more time we play there, the better.

Draw looks relatively similar to last year.

            We play these teams twice:

            Premiers (Pies instead of Geelong)
            Fremantle (again)
Essendon (usually these guys and/or St Kilda)
            GWS (derby)
            Bulldogs
            Adelaide

Five other home games: Geelong, our bogey team the Suns. Melbourne, Carlton, North Melbourne

Six other away games vs Port, Brisbane, St Kilda, West Coast (in Adelaide Hills), Richmond, Hawks (but not in Tasmania)

Well, it's decided then, Sydney Are Premiers !

No need to play this season at all.

And just as they were finally getting over not having the GF at the MCG for a couple years. Back down into the
hell of injustice and personal trauma they go....

A lot of people still don't seem to know what the A in AFL stands for.
Technically, Round 1 has plenty of games in Melbourne.

The four games in NSW and QLD to start things off are part of a new “Opening Round” before Round 1.

5 games in Melbourne by my count (3 at MCG and 2 at Marvel). Like that split, even though we used to get a minimum of 6 Vic games, but it usually included playing down at the Cattery.

Correction we do play 6 games in Melbourne (i can' count!!!). Split evenly between MCG & Marvel.

The AFL site has an article, on what they think the fans of each club would most want for the upcoming season. In it, they speculate that our biggest wish is for Sam Reid to remain fit and get back to the role he played in 2022.

All I want for Christmas is... every club's 2024 wishlist - All I want for Christmas is... every club's 2024 wishlist

I'm not sure if that's right? If they're talking about the tall forward/back up ruck role, I thought McLean performed that role very well last season, so I hope he continues to develop that this season. And while we're talking tall forwards, perhaps my major wish for the season, is for McDonald to go from heir apparent to genuine star. Amartey staying injury free and stepping up would also be nice. So, while I recognise that Reid has played some excellent games when fit, I'm currently thinking that he should probably play a bit of VFL, to make sure his body right, and only come into the side, if one of the younger key forwards lose form or get injured.

At the other end of the ground, I have another strong wish or two. That is, for Tom McCartin to stay injury free and for one of our other key defenders to step up, so a Ted Richards and Heath Grundy defensive partnership can develop.

This is crap as far as I'm concerned. Reid, while a good player, has been missing for so long everyone is calling Laura Ashley. He is 32 on the 27th December. I think it pretty irrelevant to the future whether he comes back or not.

A fit Reid is genuinely a very good player.

Barring a bad run of injuries, the VFL side should be very strong, this assists player development, as well as maybe winning more which is always nice :-)

He is, and could be important to us making a challenge this year.

But I can think of a dozen or so items closer to the top of my new year wish list - like Campbell absorbing the self-belief from his mate Errol, McDonald's star shining brightly now that it is no longer in the Franklin shadow, Grundy recapturing AA form, McCartin taking over the mantle of "best key defender in Sydney" from Taylor down the road etc etc.
