Getting to the Grand Final isn't good enough. If we finish on top, we have to win it.
Every time the Swans finished on top of the ladder in the past 100 years, the Swans made the Grand Final and lost it.
1935 - 16-2, lost Grand Final to Collingwood by 20 points.
1936 - 16-2, lost Grand Final to Collingwood by 11 points.
1945 - 16-4, lost Grand Final to Carlton by 28 points.
1996 - 16-5-1, lost Grand Final to North Melbourne by 43 points.
2014 - 17-5, lost Grand Final to Hawthorn by 63 points.
2016 - 17-5, lost Grand Final to Western Bulldogs by 22 points.
Older seasons where South Melbourne finished on top had a different finals system with a right of challenge for the minor premiers. Finishing on top guaranteed an appearance in the deciding match.
1909 - 14-4, defeated Carlton in Grand Final by 2 points. (Argus system - lost final to Carlton and exercised right of challenge.)
1912 - 14-4, lost Grand Final to Essendon by 14 points. (Argus system - lost semi final to Essendon and exercised right of challenge.)
1918 - 13-1, defeated Collingwood in Final by 2 points. (Argus system - had right of challenge but wasn't needed.)
This is a 106-year drought I want to break. Finish on top, win Grand Final. Of course, we have to finish on top first.
