Getting to the Grand Final isn't good enough. If we finish on top, we have to win it.

Every time the Swans finished on top of the ladder in the past 100 years, the Swans made the Grand Final and lost it.

1935 - 16-2, lost Grand Final to Collingwood by 20 points.
1936 - 16-2, lost Grand Final to Collingwood by 11 points.
1945 - 16-4, lost Grand Final to Carlton by 28 points.
1996 - 16-5-1, lost Grand Final to North Melbourne by 43 points.
2014 - 17-5, lost Grand Final to Hawthorn by 63 points.
2016 - 17-5, lost Grand Final to Western Bulldogs by 22 points.

Older seasons where South Melbourne finished on top had a different finals system with a right of challenge for the minor premiers. Finishing on top guaranteed an appearance in the deciding match.

1909 - 14-4, defeated Carlton in Grand Final by 2 points. (Argus system - lost final to Carlton and exercised right of challenge.)
1912 - 14-4, lost Grand Final to Essendon by 14 points. (Argus system - lost semi final to Essendon and exercised right of challenge.)
1918 - 13-1, defeated Collingwood in Final by 2 points. (Argus system - had right of challenge but wasn't needed.)

This is a 106-year drought I want to break. Finish on top, win Grand Final. Of course, we have to finish on top first.

Surely, the Argus system should have been available to us in 2016 !

You're presuming we wouldn't have been screwed again.

I get your point but it's unfair that people keep looking at 2016 as a failure. I know it is in the record books but we all know what happened.

I agree 2016 was a farce and a tainted win by the Bulldogs, but if you take your argument to its logical conclusion, then 2005 was a fake win by us, as Sampi was held (plenty of photos showing this), and he should have had a free kick at goal instead of Leo Barry being awarded the mark.

Officially, we are yet to win the premiership after winning the minor premiership, and it is still a trend we want to break.

The kick that led to Leo Barry's mark came from Dean Cox who pushed Darren Jolly in the back to take the mark. Leo shouldn't have had to mark it.

Blatant free. Huge grab by Leo however.

So we've picked out one free in a whole game of footy to claim that our win in 2005 is as fake and undeserved as the Fairypups 2016 win? Get an effing grip.

Assume you're talking about Sampi and not Cox

You are misquoting me. Don’t be an ass, and show some courtesy to other forum members who are just discussing analogies.

Your "analogy" was highly contentious and deserved to be disputed when you consider that the Leo Barry marking contest was the result of the umpires missing a clear free kick to Darren Jolly moments beforehand.

I wasn't being an ass, my comment was aimed at a collective who seem to be drawing a huge bow by implying that our flag in 2005 is as undeserved as the Fairypups AFL sanctioned fix in 2016.

I think Sandridge shot down that collectives wacky theory anyway.

FWIW, I tried to edit the 'effing' part of my post but left it too late. I stand by the 'get a grip' part though.
