How do we take this advantage away from the best backline teams?

For me there isn’t an easy answer in that first qtr except for our tall forwards will have to be equal to their opposite number.

I sense that we are on parity in the other areas first qtr but lesser in our tall forward craft playing more defensive first qtr when needed.

Our tall forwards will have to get better and better at negating the best tall defenders in the first qtr.

It won’t take much more to create a 50/50 first qtr against the best backline defending teams but McDonald, Amartey, Hayward, McLean etc will have to sharpen their craft to bring the ball to ground better in that first half when sometimes they are flying for the mark. They will have to get better at their body work to keep their elite tall defenders in starting spots that they don’t want to be before the marking contest.

For me that is probably the critical adjustment along with using that sideline overlaps a little earlier for our exits first qtr. I know this will allow the opposition to zone but we need to first of all get our first qtrs to even against the best tall backline defending teams. A relatively even first qtr has us in the drivers seat and we will be bloody hard to stop.

I mean we already bloody hard to stop even when behind significantly after the first qtr.

For me, that magnificent win against Richmond at the MCG in 2021 signalled that we had something truly special developing in this team.

For me it was the last match of 2020. Despite it being a loss, you could see the promise. I remember saying to my mate that when these boys mature a bit they will be absolutely awesome. Then the match against Richmond, as well as the one against Brisbane, put it out there for all to see.

Well, he is the coach of the other team. It probably doesn't serve him and Geelong much purpose to say "if Sydney get a roll on,
we can't really do much to stop them....". He has to try and put a positive spin on what happened (giving up a six goal lead) on
            Sunday arvo somehow.

Chris Scott is the most interesting coach to listen to post game.

Compare him vs 3 Flag winning coach Damien Hardwick or John Longmire.

Hardwick is fairly open with his assessment whether a loss or win. Structurally and game plan he is more than open which has always surprised me.

Longmire sticks to the first two principles of pressure and pressure lol ???? and doesn’t deviate much. If he does get dragged away he tends to adjust to always looking to improve and get better at our key areas.

Chris Scott just loves play the “i know better than you” card. For an ex thug type player he really does a good job of masking his aggressive streak. Even in the coaches box he appears to very regulated, especially vs Horse.

On the surface Chris Scott loves to be articulate and a sorcery or mysterious strategy. He loves to appear engaging but the can be quite confrontational and condescending in a weirdly charming way. He loves to digress to ecosystem thinking and appear like he is an advisor to the AFL.

He is certainly quite the character Chris Scott and rarely a dull post match interview.

Chris scott is not telling the truth and wants to keep his rucks confidence up, Grundy was enormous and probably the best player on ground.
I agree it could be our biggest issue. If one of our star midfielders goes down we have Parker and Mills as a back up. If Grundy gets injured we have Ladhams, who I am not sure is up to the standard.

Chris Scott has likely mellowed. It's been quite a while now since he played. Hardwick was no saint on the field either. These guys are
vaguely smart people and like many others they eventually grow up too and start to come across as bone fide adult people. I never
really get the criticisms of Longmire. Four GFs in 13 years. Two of the losses, our guys didn't show up. And the other loss is 2016
where we weren't helped by the umps finding it very difficult to pay a free kick against the opposition. There are 18 teams with
a salary cap and a decent chuck of Vic bias, it's kinda hard to win flags. Outside of some of the clubs' fans, he seems to be
extremely well regarded. One of the best in the business, as you-know-who would say. I think as fans we are biased towards
instant gratification (ie regular flags) and if it doesn't happen the coach is to blame. A lot of people I know that support other
teams would have their teams' coach sacked in a heartbeat if they could.

                    Coaches votes.

                    Heeney 9
                    Gulden 8
                    Chad 7
                    Paps 3
                    Grundy 2
                    Jeremy Cameron 1

Personally think Grundy is a bit stiff, but clearly good for my Brownlow bet to see Isaac get 9 if the umpires agree.

Yes, I thought BOG was a toss up between Heeney, Gulden, Warner and Grundy, but I skipped the first quarter when watching the replay, so my opinion could be a bit off.

And I noticed that Isaac, Chad and Errol are first, fourth and ninth respectively, in the overall vote tally. The ICEmen cometh.

Because I've only watched the Chad goal at the end 20 times, lord there are some good things.

First, we create at least two stoppages between Rowie's brutal tackle on Bowes and McInerney's hand to stop the Atkins handball underground.

Then, Rowie's gather and handball among a truckload of traffic; Gulden working Atkins into the contest to give himself space and to take the ball and clear it (right foot if you don't mind); Amartey winning a two on one; Wilbur having the pace and composure to gather and handball with Stewart up his date; I have previously remarked on Logan fanning off after the kick to guard space in the event of a bad bounce and turnover, but what a kick - not 50 ahead where it'd be dribbling around and Chad would get gobbled up, but 20-30 ahead where it would pivot and bounce up for Chad; and then of course Chad's run.

One of the best goals you will see.

And I quite liked the effort of Wicks, to give the Geelong pursuer a little distracting tap on the arm. Just to let him know that he's being caught, not catching.

It's splitting hairs, as it is most weeks, but I thought Errol was our best on Sunday.

On AFL360 they showed footage of some of our goals from different camera angles than what was shown on the telecast. It was taken from ground level and the footage from behind Logan of his kick leading to that Chad goal was amazing!
