Melbourne's fixture theory would mean a home-and-away season eight weeks longer.

After last season I would have thought the dess would be asking for a shorter season, not longer. After all, they were on top of the ladder only 4 weeks, IIRC, before the finals started only to be bundled out in the first week of the finals. They should be asking for a 15 round comp, only playing each team once, so that the season is over before they get tired.

Without arguing the pros and cons of a longer season I think the one overriding reason why clubs and especially Melbourne would want a longer season is money.
More money from TV rights more from increased cost of memberships etc although the players association would be in there fighting tooth and nail for an increase in the salary cap.

As a fan I don't think I could last a 30 round home-and-away season. Much as I love football, I'm quite happy to pack it all away in October and not think about it, at least until the draft.

I can't imagine what an extended season would be like for players...

As much as I love footy too, I think you could make the season way too long...then we'll have overkill (look what's happened to cricket)......How does that expression go........LESS IS MORE!
