    Grandstand Rescue

From the Swans Melbourne office: -

    GRANDSTAND RESCUE

The old Grandstand at the Lake Oval South Melbourne is in disrepair and
    in danger of being demolished!

A syndicate headed up by Tony Morwood and Rob Pascoe (Swans Melbourne
based Board director) are campaigning to have the stand restored and
used to house the Swans Melbourne office, a museum for the South
Melbourne Football & Cricket Clubs, a base for the Emerald Hill Mission
(who look after homeless people in the South Melbourne area) and provide
facilities that may be used by local community groups.

The syndicate will be targeting Mr. Thwaites and Mr. Bracks with a
proposal to encourage the government to find the funds that can used to
save this public asset so that it can be utilised in the local community
as well as it being the last visual link with the Swans history when
    based at South Melbourne.

We need your help by logging on to www.grandstandrescue.com.au
    <
http://www.grandstandrescue.com.au>; and sending an email to the
government personnel concerned asking them not to demolish the stand and
    why.

An example of the passionate pleas are:

"I strongly support the restoration of the grandstand at the Lake Oval
in Albert Park and encourage the government to find the funds so that
this unique piece of sporting heritage can be of use to house local
community groups such as the Emerald Hill Mission, South District
Football Club, as well as be used to house museums displaying memories
of the South Melbourne Football and Cricket Clubs! "

"The grandstand is extremely important to South Melbourne supporters.
It is a physical reminder of our club's proud history and we need to
keep it. 8 years ago, I even had some of my wedding photos taken with
    that grandstand in the background!"

"As the Premier I feel it is your responsibility to try and stop the
demolition of the stand. You have know idea how much this tugs at the
heart strings of South Melbourne supporters. It is our final link to our
    past since relocation to Sydney"

"The suggestion - Parks Victoria realise that the LAKE OVAL GRANDSTAND
is not only a football club's historic feature but a symbolic structure
representing a Victorian way of life. The stand should be repaired to a
point where it is accessible underneath to form a Melbourne Swans club
office & restaurant to supply the constant demand of the 20,000
    Victorian Swans Supporters. "

"We have lost our club to another state, lost our playing surface to
another sport, don't make us lose our past to another structure."

I don't really have an opinion on this either way

    but
"We have lost our club to another state, lost our playing surface to
another sport, don't make us lose our past to another structure."
Made me feel really sorry for South Supporters, imagine how gutting all that would be.

Speaking as a south supporter, I couldn't really give a fat rats clacker. It's a crappy old stand, no different to any other monstrosity of that era. If they wanted to save anything, I'd go for the press box at HFF. that more than anything typified the Lake Oval.

I actually expected most of the Swan's supporters to consider it a great idea to keep it but it seems only few like the idea.

Well put me under the few, would love to see it kept as a reminder of the History of SMFC (and now Sydney Swans FC).

It would be nice to keep it Glenn, but......

Why didn't the powers to be do something about it ages ago when it wouldn't have cost any where near as much. Could have been turned into a great nightclub venue, restaurant etc. Why because we were deemed by the AFL as dispensible, (as was our history) with a committee that was prepared to roll over, not like those at Fitzroy who fought it tooth and nail in the late 70's. So the South stand was of little importance to anyone but the South Melbourne Cricket Club. Then they left.

State Govt didn't do anything about it when they built the Grand Prix track, and it was regarded as footy heritage then, thats why they didn't tear it down then, I think. Why would the Govt give funds to save it now?

Interestingly the old Fitzroy ground In Brunswick St is still there stand and all the last time I looked. The Junction oval at StKilda is still there and the South Ground was converted to a Soccer Stadium but there was no compulsion the maintain the stand.

Sorry mate it is gorn, despite the crocodile tears from Tony Morwood and his crew. I guess though they are "seen" to be doing something.

Thanks for the constructive input you buffoon.

If we can turn it into something that supports and strengthens our club, both culturally and financially, it would be fantastic to have a real Melbourne base for our supporters across Australia to come to and enjoy.

Thanks for that incisive bit of name calling.

The swans are a Sydney club, which still doesnt have a social club house (leagues club) in Sydney, and missing quite a bit of other infrastructure.

To spend a cent on melbourne which we left 25 years ago and will never go back to, while sydney goes missing, would be gross mismanagement.

At this stage Melbourne has around 7,800 members with another 10,000 to 15,000 supporters who regularly attend games but are not financial members of the club. Hence we have a target 20,000 membership campaign in Melbourne.

If the club was to turn another 10,000 of those to financial members that would be another $1,000,000 + a year straight into the clubs revenue.

If it takes the restoration of the Lakeside Oval Stand with some money from the club to provide a new long term home at our spiritual home, to convert these supporters then it is a win/win for everyone including the club, Melbourne based members and Sydney based members.

You seem to forget Barry that our club is in a unique position where the health of the club in Melbourne does and will continue to play an important part of the long term survival in Sydney.

                            Saving the Lake Oval Grandstand

Am surprised that this issue has not been brought up on RWO. I see that Grandstand as an intrensic part of our club's history prior to its move. It would be very sad to see it go.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this issues? Maybe some of of our older Blooders fans from south of the border can tell us of some of their memories of this stand? And indeed of the old Lake Oval in general.

Tell us Sydneysiders who were never there what it was like down at the Lake when the Bloods were playing.

                            JF

PS:- How about we re-locate the Grandstand to the Lakeside Oval at the SCG. Or re-create it and use it as a training facility for the clubs who play there?
