From the Swans Melbourne office: -
GRANDSTAND RESCUE
The old Grandstand at the Lake Oval South Melbourne is in disrepair and
in danger of being demolished!
A syndicate headed up by Tony Morwood and Rob Pascoe (Swans Melbourne
based Board director) are campaigning to have the stand restored and
used to house the Swans Melbourne office, a museum for the South
Melbourne Football & Cricket Clubs, a base for the Emerald Hill Mission
(who look after homeless people in the South Melbourne area) and provide
facilities that may be used by local community groups.
The syndicate will be targeting Mr. Thwaites and Mr. Bracks with a
proposal to encourage the government to find the funds that can used to
save this public asset so that it can be utilised in the local community
as well as it being the last visual link with the Swans history when
based at South Melbourne.
We need your help by logging on to www.grandstandrescue.com.au
<
http://www.grandstandrescue.com.au>; and sending an email to the
government personnel concerned asking them not to demolish the stand and
why.
An example of the passionate pleas are:
"I strongly support the restoration of the grandstand at the Lake Oval
in Albert Park and encourage the government to find the funds so that
this unique piece of sporting heritage can be of use to house local
community groups such as the Emerald Hill Mission, South District
Football Club, as well as be used to house museums displaying memories
of the South Melbourne Football and Cricket Clubs! "
"The grandstand is extremely important to South Melbourne supporters.
It is a physical reminder of our club's proud history and we need to
keep it. 8 years ago, I even had some of my wedding photos taken with
that grandstand in the background!"
"As the Premier I feel it is your responsibility to try and stop the
demolition of the stand. You have know idea how much this tugs at the
heart strings of South Melbourne supporters. It is our final link to our
past since relocation to Sydney"
"The suggestion - Parks Victoria realise that the LAKE OVAL GRANDSTAND
is not only a football club's historic feature but a symbolic structure
representing a Victorian way of life. The stand should be repaired to a
point where it is accessible underneath to form a Melbourne Swans club
office & restaurant to supply the constant demand of the 20,000
Victorian Swans Supporters. "
"We have lost our club to another state, lost our playing surface to
another sport, don't make us lose our past to another structure."
