Whilst the best solution is renovation in situation I doubt that any government would want to spend the $ on this facility. The need to find the $ now and ongoing will be extensive. I also doubt that Sydney (Club or interested party) will find the $ to relocate this Grand Stand to Sydney. Based on what I see in the photos there would be a need for hundreds of thousands of $ to move / relocate. This isn?t something that can be moved in a Ute!

Heck just to paint and patch would cost over $80K. Assuming that there isn't any Asbestos or lead paint to be removed?

Lots of $1 sausages & BBQ just to get a paint job?

This needs a coordinated approach by sponsors, club fundraisers etc.

As a South / Sydney supporter I wouldn't like to see the history disappear

Happy to pitch in where ever possible

If it has to go then a relocation to Sydney is fine by me. Need a sponsor!

Am surprised that this issue has not been brought up on RWO. I see that Grandstand as an intrensic part of our club's history prior to its move. It would be very sad to see it go.

          From Ian Hicks
          Manager Culture and Recreation
          City of Port Philip

Thank you for your recent email addressed to the
Mayor and Councillors regarding the future of Bob
Jane Stadium and the retention of the old
          grandstand.

Council appreciates that there are a number of
people in the community who have a connection with
the old grandstand and a strong interest in its
          retention.

Council has in the past and will continue to
advocate for future uses of the South Melbourne
Grandstand that are appropriate in a park setting and
that would make its retention viable, as Council
understands the building has a long association
          with the local community.

Council is aware of current discussions regarding
the future of Olympic Park and the potential use
of Bob Jane Stadium. We are confident that the
City will be part of any future discussion
regarding the stadium, including looking at viable
options for retention of the grandstand.

          Yours sincerely

          Ian Hicks

The swans are a Sydney club, which still doesnt have a social club house (leagues club) in Sydney, and missing quite a bit of other infrastructure.

To spend a cent on melbourne which we left 25 years ago and will never go back to, while sydney goes missing, would be gross mismanagement.
Now isnt that typical of a Sydney based person,we are it and the rest of you can get stuffed.BTW you do have a club that you can go to in sydney, its in Darlinghurst st,Kings Cross, and at the moment it is just being revamped, you would know this if you are a member sounds like you are not.Your right the Swans are a sydney based club but you cant forget your roots, thats why they have SMFC on the back of there jumpers.

Surely there are far more important things to our history that a dilapidated old grand stand.

I know this is an old topic, but wouldn't it be better to spend the money developing some sort of state of the art function centre/hall of fame type place rather than some old bleacher.
