Sydney Swans will launch the 2024 NAB AFLW season at North Sydney Oval Friday night to start a 10 week season.

All-Australian ruck Ally Morphett has overcome a foot concern to be named for Round 1. Woo hoo!


SYDNEY

New faces: Sarah Grunden, Kiara Hillier (league debuts), Giselle Davies, Hayley Bullas (club debut), Maddy Collier (return from ACL).

Hillier was recruited to the club in a trade with the Brisbane Lions, while Grunden joined the Swans with pick 16 in the 2023 AFLW Draft.

I only tuned in just before half time, but I enjoyed what I saw. I thought it was an excellent third quarter, that essentially finished off the game. The tackling pressure was very good. If Collingwood held the ball for more than a second, they were inevitably crunched. The ball movement and goal kicking was also pretty impressive. The attack fell away a bit in the last, but despite some sort of comeback by Collingwood, the result was never really in doubt.

Gardiner, McEvoy, Ham, Molloy, Tarrant and Morphett all looked like they could have big seasons coming up, while I quite liked the little bit I saw of Hillier and Davies.

I thought Ally got shaded by Frederick again. She isn't at her best against bulky apponents who take her space. But Giselle was usful as a relief.

The big eye opener for me was Alice Mitchell, easily her best game - has looked a bit lost sometimes but tonight she looked more like the high draft pick she was.

Also good to see Bullas, she was quite the terrier tonight.

What an amazing third quarter. I don't know what SG said at half time but it worked. It was pretty tight up until then. When we got our ball movement going it was sizzling how quickly we moved it from end to end. Hopefully, we start to do that for longer periods moving forward.

I don't know if it's my inherent bias as a Swans' supporter, but I was getting ticked off with both the umps and commentary team last night.

Yes, brilliant third quarter, we had looked a bit dour / first match-ish up till then. Hope we build on that quarter going into our next game.

Also agree with RnR that Ally was shaded (though she was certainly not badly beaten). She doesn’t look as fit as she was last season in her prime, which is understandable given all the injury rehabilitation time she has had to go through. She probably needs a couple of games to work her way back. Unfortunately a season of 11 matches over 10 weeks doesn't provide much tIme.

I've really struggled watching AFLW since it's inception.

My wife laughs at me, she reckons every year round 1 I get excited to watch and, by 1/4 time I give up and not watch a game for the rest of the season.

Last year I nailed my own concern with AFLW, the infrequency of a team being able to maintain possession for 3+ consecutive disposals.

It results in pinball play, low scoring.

However....

Friday night's match had a lot more maintaining of posession and I personally found it a most entertaining night on the couch.

Do consider signing up, it’s not a lot of money (cf with men’s membership) and the Swans women clearly are getting a lot of confidence from the support they have in terms of membership and crowd numbers.

The crowd on Friday night was 5,489
Only 15 people more than the attended our last seasons Swans opener against the Giants.
A bit surprising, you'd think the 'Pies would draw more?
Or was it the 7.15 time-slot?
Last year the Magpies season opener was also a night game but had 8,412 attendees so maybe not.

I do hope attendance doesn't fall.

Can someone tell me — how is the pressure rating calculated? Is someone sitting in the box (or wherever) giving a rating score every time a Swans player competes for the ball? And then averages them out somehow at the team level? If so, what a job …. deserves a pressure rating of its own.

i see Collingwood’s White has been suspended for three matches for that awful late hit on Maddy Collier that left Collier concussed. Good, White was so late she had time to pull out of supposed attempted spoil.
