    AFLW Round 12 vs Essendon

Sydney's final home and away match is a home game against Essendon. Essendon last won a game in round 3. Like their men's team, Essendon's women's team has had some injuries.

Sydney currently sits outside the top eight by 1.3%, which is a margin of about 7 points. This is a big improvement on last week's position when Sydney was one game outside the top eight, thanks to Adelaide's defeat by Port Adelaide last week.

To make the finals, Sydney needs to win this game by about 7 points more than Adelaide wins against Fremantle. Adelaide will play their game the following day, so they will go to their game knowing the margin that they need to win by to finish ahead of Sydney on percentage. However, Fremantle have won their last three games and will not be pushovers.

Sydney's chances have been hampered by Molloy's back injury ending her season, and Hamilton's injury last week also forcing her out of the team. Hurley replaces Hamilton after her recovery from injury. Essendon also makes one forced change with Sheridan coming in to the team to replace the injured Brown.

    Go Swans!

The AFL website has analysed the highest and lowest finishing positions for the top 10 teams. The analysis is deficient in that it ignores the slender percentage gap between Adelaide and Sydney.

The match was due to start at 5.05 pm. The start has been delayed to 5.40 pm due to severe weather at Coffs Harbour.

This should be an old-fashioned wet weather game. Four goals could win it.

Q1: 0 v 2 - that is points not goals, a very wet and muddy scrap. Essendon have had much more territory - inside50 are 4-17, but our defence is holding up well. Fish is amazing in the wet, of course!

The conditions are awful, but we are playing like we are dead last on the ladder. Absolutely woeful so far - no leadership and beyond a couple like Fish playing well, most look like swans very much out of water. A giant rocket is needed at half time.

Almost a totally pointless half. Strange stats. We're in front in many areas, but way behind in forward 50 entries.

Why are we even playing in Coffs?

I’m not reading too much into the first half, I think the crazy inside 50 difference was mainly due to the teams playing kick to kick over the Essendon 50 metre line for most of the first quarter.

Awful. The poor patrons up in Coffs having to endure that. Just a rolling maul in the mud and the only goal coming from a free kick.

The commentary team are desperate for a Weagles win.

It is nauseating to listen to.

Absolutely pitiful performance. I know conditions were terrible, but we were totally inept. What exactly was the game plan?

That looked like us playing in our first season. Zero leadership out there today - only moments of brilliance like Fish to keep us in it.

What a woeful end to the season.

Well, that was a disappointing end to a season that started so well. Probably lack a bit of depth, while we're still predominantly a young side and young sides are prone to inconsistency. Even players that we think of as established stars; Gardiner, Morphett, Hurley, Ham and Tarrant, are all in the early twenties. So, hopefully they will all improve next season.
