    Rnd 16 v Tuggeranong

    Sydney 15.10-100
    Tuggeranong 8.13-61

    Listed players:

    Barlow
    Fosdike
    Faulks
    Currie
    Smith
    Murphy
    O'Dwyer
    Orreal
    Beckmans
    Bruce

10 listed players and 12 top-ups, of which only 1 I recognised as a regular top-up, Bottin-Noonan. No Rawson, Rampe or Spiteri. The situation was so grim, they ran out of jumpers in the 50's, so we had kids running around in #8, #22 and #36.

To be honest, a loss would not have surprised, even with Tuggeranong at the foot of the ladder, we were just so undermanned it wasn't funny. Last time we played Tuggeranong before the Melbourne game, they pushed us for most of the day and that side contained Davis, Schmidt, Brennan, White, Crouch, Veszpremi, Meredith, Terlich, Grundy and Brabazon, all missing for this game and six of whom played seniors today.

    The Game:

Q1: Fosdike started on the bench, Orreal in the ruck and Currie at FF. Sydney dominated the clearances with both Orreal and Currie giving all our onballers first use. Aaron Bruce and O'Dwyer were particularly damaging and Smith was like a ball magnet. Murphy was providing drive from the back and a perfectly executed 50m pass to Beckmans saw it quickly moved onto the square where Smith contested for Orreal to crumb a goal. Barlow got more touches in the first 15 mins then I reckon he got for the year to date, but unfortunately he drifted out of the game again later. Fossie came on after about 15 minutes and was very lively. Despite running into a stiff breeze, Swans led 5-1 to 1-7.

Q2: Early on Currie took a strong mark 50m out near the boundary, cross kicking a beautiful pass to find Fosdike all alone 40m out in front. he duly goaled. Goal of the day next saw Bruce break 2 tackles from a centre bounce,
swerve past another took a bounce and then drilled it from 50. Murphy continued to hold the backline together and laid 3 tackles one after the other to keep Tuggeranong at bay 10m out from the goal. From the resulting ball-up, O'Dwyer gathered and sprinted downfield, took a couple of bounces and found #8 (not DOK ) who goaled. Fosidke was really finding his feet and looked in no discomfort at all, running everywhere in his usual style. 1/2 time Swans 10-3 to 2-8

Q3: Two quick goals to Tuggeranong when Murphy twice tried to be a little too cute rather than spoiling saw them fire up. This was snuffed out quickly by a terrific contested mark by Smith who goaled. Bruce chased and laid a great tackle which led to a Beckmans goal and Smith was in the thick of it again, breaking 2 tackles before kicking long and finding Currie on the lead with a good contested mark. Swans steadied and Smith and Fosdike were getting possessions at will. 3/4 time Swans 15-5 to 4-10.

One of the joys of Canberra footy is joining the 3/4 time huddle. Allison was wrapped with the guys and told them so. He showed them the white board and said "Nothing to change here, you've been terrific, now let's finish off the game with the same intensity"

Q4: The workload started to show on the players and they didn't quite finish off the game as the coach had hoped, but it was a terrific all round effort.

Smith played every minute of the game and was just terrific, I would love to know how many possessions he racked up, it was a big, big number. He made a few kicking errors, but as Caro would say, he was probably 'rooted'. Fosdike was also good, so good that he may well be back sooner than I would have thought. O'Dwyer was also good, although I feel he went a touch off the boil after halftime. Both ruckman played the whole game, resting at FF. Orreal played easily his best game for the year and Currie is just exciting, as ORB has stated many times before. He takes a good contested mark when moved forward, controls the centre square and is a good reliable kick. He is ready and I have no doubt him and Jolly will commence a feared ruck combination from the start of the '09 season. Murphy provided great run from the backline ala Tadhg. Aaron Bruce also good in the midfield.

Barlow started well but went quiet, although to be fair he didn't get a lot of game time. Faulks was very disappointing. Not sure if it was a case of the opposition dragging him away from the last line, but he was lost at CHB a few times. He was finally moved to FF for the last quarter, but as can be seen, we didn't get the ball down there too many times in the final quarter.

    Cheers

Would the RWO Mods please send BBB a fleecy pair of RWO thermal underwear for his outstanding effort with this report.

It is very pleasing to hear that we have some potential players doing really well as they develop.

I still don't understand why Murphy is being groomed as a CHB if he has Goodes mobility. However, he mught be a very mobile CHB. It has been a very long time since the SWans have had a promising CHB.

Fossie sounds like he will be back in firsts very soon and much needed. Orreal seems to be developing well and very excited about Currie.

I will try to catch ressie next week in Sydney.

Terrific work, Big Bad Bustling. Very pleased to hear that the Crusher is still killing them and that the Caravan experiment is starting to pay a dividend.

great report. Gee Im not one for throwing in ruckman who are not ready, but I wouldnt be disappointed if Currie had a game or two here before the end of this year. It is as clear as day that Spida is past it now, and every report I read on the reserves says that he is getting better and better every week. I feel we may yet have the makings of a very good side in a few years time.

On the note of Barlow, the lack of game time was more precaution (Was seated today at the game near the players race and a few swans blokes and cheese himself were chatting before the game) than anything. Cheese said himself that he felt really good today and had pulled up well and was itching to try and get back in 1st team action. Good to hear Fosdike is possibly close to a 1sts return, as I feel we have missed him a bit more then we have imagined this year. A very non descript player in terms of flashiness but a very effective player none the less.

Good report 3B. HOpe you're right about Currie next year. Jolly needs a mobile partner in the ruck.

I thought Murphy had been earmarked as KPP. It would make sense - we have plenty of small forwards and midfielders, but not clear who will take the place long-term of Leo, MOL, BBH (well, not clear to me...). Great to hear Murphy's progress in 3/4 of a season.

Great report...these reserves reports are much more interesting reading than the newspaper articles etc. about the firsts. You make us feel as though we were there. Thank you.
