    Gorilla for Hall?

The Age reports that tough defender Mick Martyn could return to action as early as this Saturday, with the veteran defender likely to play his first game for Carlton against Sydney in round one.

Carlton coach Denis Pagan said he hoped to have the option of using Martyn, the "gorilla" he took at No. 84 in the national draft, "to play on the gorillas".

With the powerfully built Barry Hall set to spearhead the Swans for next Saturday night's match at Telstra Stadium, Martyn is the obvious choice, despite an interrupted pre-season.

Pagan agreed that Hall was the type of opponent for which Martyn was drafted. "It was for an Alastair Lynch, a David Neitz, an Anthony Rocca. We need somebody strong because we haven't got any height or powerfully built defenders," he said.

Martyn said he would "definitely be available for round one", meaning the final decision will rest with Carlton selectors.

"We hope he is up and going," Pagan said. "He has got to train this week. He played in our competitive work yesterday and a lot of things can happen between now and then."
