Into Round 5, and our sensational run of weather continued with all grounds bathed in sunshine and most surfaces in great condition. Monarch Oval, one of the best surfaces and certainly the biggest, was looking a treat as Campbelltown took on UNSW-ES on Sunday.
Winning the toss and kicking to the old scoreboard end in the first quarter, the Blues had the better of play early but could only manage behinds. The Blues scored 5 behinds in a row before Owen Love pounced on a loose ball to finally get a major score on the board after 11 minutes. On 14 minutes, the ball went long to a contest in the goalsquare, and although Shanan Kershaw was unable to hold the ball it went loose for Dale Chivas to soccer it through. Kershaw was next to score, grabbing a throw-in and running round to kick truly. And when Ben Yakimov ran through the centre to set up Owen Love, the Blues were out to a 29-point lead.
In the latter stages of the quarter, the Bulldogs finally got their game going and made their first steps towards pulling back the deficit. Twice within a minute Brad Abbott led out, marked and goaled. Leigh Lavery had a set shot from just inside the 50 which failed by just millimetres to cross the line.
The Bulldogs played their best football in the second quarter, slowly but surely working their way back into the contest. Another double from Abbott took his total so far to 4 and put the Bulldogs within a kick. Against the run of play Chivas got one for the Blues. On 18 minutes, Max Collett steered a goal through from a tight angle; and when Earl Shaw banged one through at the 22 minute mark scores were level. But the Blues steadied, with a mark in the pocket and goal from Luke Coughlan after the siren restoring the lead for Campbelltown at the long break.
So the game moved into the premiership quarter, when games are so often won and lost. And it was the case again this time. It took less than 30 seconds for Owen Love to scoop a loose ball and score, and at 6 minutes he was again in the thick of the action, intercepting a kick-in for another goal.
On the vast Monarch surface, a player who finds room to move is well set, and Mark Edwins put on a sensational run. Gathering the ball in the half-back line with no Bulldog opponent in sight, Edwins went forward for a run. Five bounces later, Edwins delivered to Owen Love and the number 33 scored his 5th.
The Bulldogs launched a brief fightback which resulted in Josh Parmenter scoring a double, but the Blues quickly re-asserted control. But the Blues were their own worst enemy, some poor finishing in front of goal preventing the lead from blowing out as much as perhaps it should. But of the 10 behinds the Blues would score in the quarter, the best of them would come from another big run from Edwins which found Ray Love, but the set shot hit the post. Owen Love scored another goal in the final stages of the quarter, taking the Blues to a 26-point lead at the final change.
There would be no miracle comeback for the Bulldogs in the last quarter, and with 3 goals apiece the game would finish in a comfortable 28-point win for the Blues. Owen Love finished with 7 in a standout performance, while Dale Chivas scored 3. Mark Edwins and the Bottin-Noonan brothers were also prominent performers. For UNSW-ES, Brad Abbott was their star performer with 6 goals from limited opportunities, while Oscar Sidlo-Jones and Tim Garrett played strong games.
The result sees Campbelltown move into the top 5, remaining undefeated at Monarch so far in 2010, and confidence is growing in the Campbelltown camp that a repeat of last year?s finals appearance is possible. But for UNSW-ES, with a 2-4 record and a poor percentage, some improvement is desperately needed before the season runs away from them.
Sydney Uni?s roller-coaster season took a turn for the better when the Students completed a 46-point win over Pennant Hills at Ern Holmes on Saturday. It was goal for goal through a see-sawing first half, with the Demons leading by 5 points at the first change despite some inaccurate goal-kicking before the Students took out a 2-point lead at the long break. The third quarter also saw multiple lead changes, and at three quarter time the Students led by 6 points.
But the game changed completely in the final quarter. The Students had the fresh legs, while the exhausted and under-manned Demons had nothing more to give. A run of 9 goals to 1 turned the final margin into something considerably more than the run of play in the first three quarters suggested was likely.
Mark Egan kicked 4 and Sam Crichton 3 for the Students, while Jesse Martin, Ben Mankarious and Alex Lee were solid contributors all day. For Pennant Hills, Nick Bills kicked 3 while Tom Angel and Damian Dell?Aquila were among their best.
North Shore hosted Balmain Dockers on Saturday afternoon, and the first half was a Bomber procession. Kieran Emery up forward was a dominant force with a bag of 7 first half goals, as the Bombers took complete control in the first half. 7 goals to 1 in the first term was followed up with 9 goals to 1 in the second; and with a lead of 96 points at the long break, a margin as big as East Coast?s win over Balmain was on the cards.
But with the win already secured, the Bombers were happy to sit on their lead in the second half while the Dockers lifted their work rate in the second half; and although the final winning margin for North Shore was 108 points, Balmain find some consolation in what has been a disappointing season to date that they matched it with a top side for a half.
Kieran Emery kicked 8 for North Shore, while ruckman Russell Grigg, Jeremy Stiller and Adam Lord were among their best. For Balmain, Nick Davis kicked 4 of their 6 goals, while Chad Fletcher and Travis Stevens worked hard during the Dockers? second half effort.
North Shore?s win moved them to outright top of the table, the Bombers remaining the only undefeated team after Wests suffered their first defeat for the season at the hands of East Coast by 18 points at Blacktown. A solid start to the Eagles, with 6 goals to 2 in the first quarter, laid the platform and ensured they would never be headed throughout the afternoon. The Magpies let themselves down with several missed shots in their return of 1.6 for the second term, as the Eagles extended their lead to 32 points at half time.
After the break, the Magpies came out firing and scored 5 goals to 2 for the quarter to cut the margin back to 15 points and give themselves a chance to steal the game. But the Eagle resolve held firm and the Magpies were unable to complete the comeback in the final term.
Jamie Vlatko continued his rise as a forward to watch with a 4-goal return for the Eagles; while Ben Physick and Rowan Bilkey were among their best, a solid defence that the Magpies struggled to penetrate. For the Magpies, Dwain Watkins and Tim Lambert were reliable contributors.
For the second week in a row Wollongong had more scoring shots than their opponents but were unable to take the points after the Lions went down by 13 points to St George at North Dalton on Sunday. There was only a kick in it at half time, but the Dragons scored the only goal of the third quarter while Wollongong could only manage 5 points. And although the Lions continued to work hard, St George had the answers and with 3 goals to 2 in the final quarter did enough to take the game.
In a low-scoring contest no player in either team was able to score more than two goals. Blake Guthrie, Michael Holmes and Gavin Raper were among St George?s best; as the Dragons took out their second win in a row. Barron Hanson and Sam Dowling were key contributors for Wollongong. The Lions have been desperately unlucky this year, unable to win any of their first 5 games but being keenly competitive in 4 of them; and surely their first win for 2010 isn?t too far away.
