    Sydney AFL Round 3 2012

    SYDNEY AFL ROUND 3 2012
Article and photos by Michael Shillito

The season is still young, everyone is enthusiastic and keen to get out there and play. But there were plenty of nervous moments during the week as the heavens opened with days of rain that filled the dams and made playing venues heavy. Training was challenging for many clubs during the week, forced into makeshift arrangements away from their normal venues.
But thankfully the rain eased off later in the week; and although some grounds were closed, it was only a small number that were affected, and alternative arrangements were able to be made to ensure that all games except for one in Div 2 went ahead.

Four Premier Division games were scheduled for the weekend. Two teams looking for their first win of the season played off at Gore Hill Oval, with North Shore playing host to Campbelltown.
It had been a difficult week for Campbelltown. Easily beaten by Balmain last weekend, the Blues were then forced into pulling their Under 18s team out of the competition. And the draw was unkind, sending them to Gore Hill Oval, a ground that even during the club?s golden era of 20 years ago was often a thorn in their side.
Their opponents, North Shore, would have had reason to go into the game feeling under-done. The Easter break and then a bye meant it had been three weeks since they had played a game. But any fears the Bombers would be rusty were quickly blown away in a one-sided opening term. Pat Brackin kicked the first goal of the game within 30 seconds, but it was Danny Roberts who dominated the first quarter. The red-headed forward scored six goals for the quarter, most of them showing far superior strength in one-out marking contests.

Campbelltown mentor Craig McGough was furious with his charges? first quarter, making his displeasure known with a vocal quarter time speech that could be heard from over the fence. And the Blues rallied early in the second quarter, with four of the first five goals as they attempted to work their way back into the contest. The Linsen brothers were influential during that period of play, getting a stack of possession in the midfield.
But Campbelltown?s comeback was short-lived as North Shore steadied. Daniel Roberts, after his first quarter heroics, copped a knock early in the second and was on the bench for much of that quarter before returning to the action after half time. Big Sam Naismith dominated the ruck, as well as adding two goals for the quarter. Tim Nash was getting plenty of the ball, and David Orr, wearing a helmet bearing a resemblance to a ninja turtle, was a focal point up forward. For all the Blues? efforts, the Bombers won the quarter and held a 56-point lead at half time.
The game was already effectively over, and the Bombers were cruising in the third term. But they would suffer a blow as new recruit Keith Mitchell went down in a head clash, suffering horrific facial injuries that will probably sideline him for the rest of the season. Campbelltown had injury worries in the last quarter, but fortunately nothing that is likely to see anyone out for any long period of time.
The Bombers had a comfortable second half, with four unanswered goals in the third term; and then despite squandering some chances kicked six goals to one in the last to finish with a 116-point win.

It was the fourth time in a row that North Shore has beaten Campbelltown by over 100 points. Daniel Roberts finished with seven goals. Errol Sertbas, coming up from the Under 18s for his senior debut, took to Premier Division football like a duck to water in a best-on-ground performance; while Tim Nash and Dale Fitzgerald were also influential for the Bombers. On a difficult afternoon for the Blues, Marcus Linsen, Bryce Martin and Bryce Joynson worked hard all day.

Waverley Oval was out of action on Saturday, and so the match between UTS and Sydney Hills was moved to Blacktown No 2. It was a game that saw UTS win their second game on the trot, entering the top five for the first time in their short history in Premier Division when they recorded a 29-point win over the Eagles.
The Bats had the better of a low-scoring opening term to win by 13 points at the first change. The second quarter saw the Bats peppering the goals, creating chance after chance but struggling to convert. A run of 4.8 for the quarter meant that, for all the possession flow they were generating, they only won the quarter by six points.
The Eagles, despite having been outplayed in the second term, were still close enough to be a chance of getting back into the game. But the Bats locked them out of the contest in the third term, as the Eagles were held to just two scoring shots for the quarter; and the Bats? lead was extended to 35 points at the last change. Even with the Eagles salvaging some percentage by winning the final quarter, this was UTS? afternoon. Daniel McFarlane, Thomas O?Dwyer and Hamish Turner were among UTS? best, while the Eagles got good service from James Dwyer, James Gordon and Joshua Shephard.

At the Village Green, UNSW-ES hosted Balmain on Saturday afternoon. It was a game that started slowly, with plenty of missed chances early and both sides struggling to control the slippery ball; but the game became higher-scoring as it progressed, as the game opened up.
It was low-scoring in the first term, with the Bulldogs kicking the only goal. But the second quarter saw the Bulldogs take the upper hand as they kicked four goals to one for the quarter, extending their lead to 21 points at the long break. The Dockers were their own worst enemy, kicking 1.10 for the half and squandering numerous chances to get closer to the Bulldogs.

After half time, the game opened up and the scoreboard kept ticking over. Both sides were keen to go straight down the corridor on the small Village Green ground, throwing caution to the wind, and the game opened up. It was a shootout, but the Bulldogs had the bullets that mattered with eight goals to six for the quarter. The margin was 34 points in favour of the Bulldogs at three-quarter time, and although the Dockers narrowly won the last quarter, the damage was done.
Dame Rampe, Ryan Plant and Joel Robbie were solid contributors for the Bulldogs; while the Dockers found former Rod Podbury Medallist Kristian Pearson, along with Matthew Round and Gerard Wilkie to be handy contributors.

The final game of the round was played under lights at North Dalton Oval, the red-and-white southern derby as Illawarra hosted St George. The Lions had the better of the early exchanges, with four goals to one in the first quarter giving them a 15-point quarter time lead. But St George lifted the intensity in the second term, their defence impenetrable as they held the home side scoreless. The Dragons were creating chances, but despite some inaccuracy up forward, their return of 4.8 for the quarter gave them a 17-point lead at half time.
The Dragons still struggled to convert their chances in the third quarter, kicking 1.4. The Lions rallied during the quarter, but were only able to manage two goals; enough to win the quarter, but the Dragons still retained the lead.
The final quarter saw the Lions go on the attack, and they kicked four goals in a desperate attempt to snatch the points. But the pressure of coming from behind would take its toll, and they would leak four goals to the Dragons, enough to send St George back home with the taste of victory. The Lions had won three of the four quarters, but the Dragons? dominant second quarter got them over the line.
The final margin was 11 points in favour of the Dragons. Ben Jones, Ryan Bennett and Michael Milner were prominent performers for the victors. For Illawarra, Ryan Price kicked four goals while Troy Bartlett, Wayne Edmed and Rhys Cutifani were among the Lions? best.

The next round will begin on Wednesday, with an Anzac Day blockbuster between Wests and Balmain at Picken Oval; followed by four more Premier Division games and a full round of matches in the other divisions next weekend.
