I'm not going to be able to back up my earlier statement without some time. And your bracketed statement is just using emotion as evidence. Without most of our players we wouldn't have won the flag. (We won the ********ing flag!)

totally agree with you on Hall (good tall NSW defender) and McDonald (strong big bodied ruck) both offer 5+ years . spida could be in team and out in a blink of an eye

Apart from ruck, ideally we need a tall who can play either end. A tough ask, but that is the best way to improve our lot. We have little tall cover for forward and if a tall forward line run hot against us then they are hard to stop by our small defence.

Ray Hall is the 'type' of player but whether he has enough class is doubtful.

The news that McDonald is available and his body is now right, if true, would make him a priority.

          NO!

I was the first to say it on RWO a few months ago that Leo's rebounding ability is far more useful from fullback than from a flank.

At fullback he only has to out-manouvre a big, slow full forward. Once the ball comes to ground he wins every single time

On a flank he has to match up against an equally nimble forward. His rebounding is then not as effective.

Obviously Roos agrees too. Schauble was fit enough to play, but was not given the chance even against oafs like Rocca and Gehrig. Leo is the reigning premiership fullback. And it looks like he's there to stay.

Interestingly, our backline has had more problems this year with smaller forward lines than with tall ones.

The only times tall forward lines have run rampant is when our midfield has been overrun. I'd argue that any forward line would have its day in these circumstances.

But against the West Coast in both finals games, their midfield was on top for more of the games than ours was and yet their tall forward line looked inept.

And I rewatched the Collingwood game (round 13) during the week, where the midfields pretty much broke even. The commentators were going on about how Malthouse restructured his forward line at 3/4 time, went much smaller, and suddenly the Pies came back into a game that it looked like we had won towards the end of the third quarter.

If opposition coaches continue to believe that they can exploit our so-called undersized backline by stacking their forward line with height, we will continue to win far more games than we lose, I suspect.

I agree. I thought the whole idea behind persuing Spider was to obtain a mature ruckman who could give us two, maybe three years of service whilst a young ruckman such as Eriksen (or Doyle, if fit) is trained to fill his position. I don't think the club wants much more from him than that.

I'd be reluctant to lose O'Keefe for Everitt though. Surely the club must start considering a replacement for O'Loughlin as he cannot have many more seasons left in him?

Interestingly, Roos sees it very differently. I remember last year when we signed Mick until 2008, Roos rejected the notion that it would see him out to the end of his career. He apparently regards O'Loughlin as a player who'll go on well into his 30s.

I found that surprising at the time, but with careful management its not necessarily far-fetched that we could get another five years out of him.

As an aside, we shouldn't ignore the political aspect to this. There's been a bit of an uproar recently about interstate ROK-Spida transfers in Victoria...

I have noticed his name coming up more and more in your posts. Is he someone who is actually available to the Swans??

Any deal involving O'keefe is not worth it IMO.

He's 24 next year, and played full-forward with Werribee this year. He's versatile, though, and has played well at both ends in the VFL. The Swans looked at him last year, before opting for Heath James instead. Last year, there were queries over his kicking and fitness, but from all reports he's overcome these this year. Topped the VFL goalkicking list. He's not going to be a star, but for a late-ish pick in a shallow draft, when we lack height, he's probably worth the punt. Podsiadly generates a fair bit of discussion on the Bulldogs board, as Werribee is there partner for the reserves, but they have no special rights to pick him up.

Ben Carbonaro would be able to tell us more - he sees all of the Werribee games.

                      edit: fixed up his age.

Ok I know it seems like a stupid comparisson... and while I've been withdrawing the urine about Pods for the last few months, I honestly think weighing up the pros and cons for these 2 guys is worth considering. Pods - Accurate Kick Lead and mark forward Versatile (can play fwd or back)...
