He had 3 or 4 seasons with Essndon and couldnt secure a regular place in their side.

What makes you think he will be able to get a game in a side that has finished in front of Essendon for the last 3 years.

    Remember Davis Spriggs.

I'll wait for this thread to be dragged up at the end of next year as evidence on someone's foresight or stupidity.....

That is a very ignorant bunch of comments.

Yes he couldn't get a regular game at Essendon but players leave clubs and blossom elsewhere all the time. Remember Henneman is playing games at Essendon, so should we really trust Sheedy's judgement? He's also the same bloke who has picked up Alvey, Murphy, Alan and Co.

Yeah I do remember David Spriggs. So what? Different circumstances, different player. I'll throw the same argument back at you but in a different light. Remember Darren Jolly? Couldn't get a game at Melbourne, he then comes to the Swans - bingo premiership player.

I'm not saying he's destined to be a superstar, but give the bloke a go before you sentence him to a year in Canberra.

Cant see him in the forward line. We need some height in the backs.

On a lighter note, how funny is the pic of him dumping all his Essendon gear at the op shop?

Very few players Sheedy gets rid of succeed elsewhere. Sure there are a few examples of successes in a different environment but the majority fail.

It is more ignorant to suuggest that this guy will secure a permanent position in a side that has played finals several years in a row than it is to say he will end up in the 2's.

Whose position from the last 8 weeks of the season do you suggest he takes?

                      for starters....anyone who gets injured!!!!!!!!!!
not every player from the gf is assured of a place next year.

plenty of pressure from richards, malceski, moore, mcveigh, vogels etc etc etc

dempster, bevan, lrt, schnieder, fosdike etc etc etc will all have to continue performing

Isn't it a good thing that we have a young, AFL-experienced mobile tall coming into the team... and no obvious player that he foces out?

If players the quality of Richards (and Malceski, Bevan, McVeigh etc) aren't clearly in the best 22, this is a cause for celebration, not despair.

I agree, it's better to have depth so that when the inevitable injuries come there are people there to step up and carry on with the job

At Essendon he wanted to try himself on a third tall - why not try the same with us for starters? What if he is Goodes' size and sticks with his man? Not a bad result I say.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

One reason not to is that we already have Craig Bolton, Tadhg Kennelly, LRT or even Dempster to do this. It doesn't just come down to whether he can do it, it is also whether there is anyone else already doing it better.

I'm happy to keep an open mind with Richards, just as I was with Bolton and Jolly, two other fringe players who joined at similar ages from other clubs. Both have exceeded my expectations so far, in that I expected they would continue to be fringe players at the Swans and both have firmly cemented themselves as first choice players.

If Richards becomes a first choice player and the Swans become a better team because of it, fantastic. If he remains on the fringes but adds some depth, little has been lost.

This is what I love about this site.

We win the flag on the back of inspired recruiting and player development over the past few years, and some of the luminaries and experts on this site hop straight into the recruiting of a 22 year old with 33 games under his belt, at a club that could not see a spot for him in the forward line of a team that had a miserable season up forward from so called gun forwards.

Also Sheedy did not get rid of him, he got rid of Sheedy.

Anyone thought that he might be a ready replacement for MOL who is a day to day proposition. Not to say he is in MOL's class, but...
