    #14: A total farce

You know what is ridiculous? That Kelly's #14 has been in retirement for the past few years while Ben Mathews grabbed Plugger's locker and the #4 before he had even packed his bags and left. I know we all love Kel' and he's a great tradesman and everything but Plugger was a dead set champion. It's a joke.

BRING BACK #14! Get over it!

The truth is, they have lost the key to the locker.

Surely you mean Skilton's #14 that Kelly also wore?

Whilst I was very fond of Paul "The Human Kelpie" as my father referred to him. He wasn't the best player to wear that jumper.

And while I suggest that Skilton was far more important to this club than Lockett or Kelly, I can't see any reason to leave the jumper inactive for years either.

PS Sorry for editing your post 'cow but I feel it was artistically justified, for much the same reason I am posting this response whilest in the nude.

I recently had a dream that Schneider had inherited the #14 and had dyed his hair blonde to mark the occasion.

Then again, I also dreamed that the Socceroos not only qualified for the World Cup but won the whole damn thing.

yes, get over it and give it to a young player who might play a few senior games.

i don't think there should be any consideration over whether the recipient is worthy of the jumper any more than whether he is worthy of any sub-30 jumper. the last thing i would want to see is a discussion five-ten years hence of whether the player was indeed worthy of it after all.

plenty of duds have played in number 14 and it didn't do either skilton or kelly any harm.

btw, who was the last premiership number 4? mathews was right to ask for the number and to refuse to give it back.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

Good on Benny for sticking to his guns. Plugger will be remembered for being the greatest goal kicker in the history of the game not the jumper he wore.

I say bring #14 back into circulation now. Kels has the race named after him and Skilts, well we don't need a number on a jumper to revere this man as a champion of the club. Our B&F is named after him.

It's stupid making jumper numbers sacred relics. It's the men themselves that are immortalised through their outstanding deeds on the footy field.

Why were numbers put on jumpers in the first place. It's not like other sports where the jumper represents the players position. It's just to help commentators identify the player at the bottom of the pack once footy got telecast on the radio and referees to take down a number when a player gets reported.

Paul "King" Kelly was a dead-set champion as well however, he wasn't a mercenary like Lockett - which is the difference between jumpers being retired or not....

In saying that, Kelly's number 14 should be taken out of mothballs and given to the most underperformed no-talent player on the Swans list just to make supporters like Sanecow complain about another issue that is irrelevant.....

Indeed whoever gets #14, doesn't won't detract from their predeccessors efforts in that number. Skilton's not been forgoten yet.

Yeah time to bring it back. There have been duds wear the 14 aswell as good footballers which is the same as any number.

Yeah, but it was retired because of Kelly.

Wrapping up the #14 in cotton wool and saving it for the 'right player' will only lessen what the jumper represents.

If it is saved for a specially moulded player who most likely will be a star, then the number will end up meaning nothing, it will simply be a prize.

What makes the #14 great is the players who happened to wear it and became champions.
I'm sure Kelly was wrapt to be wearing #14 when he was given it, and it may have given him 'something' that helped him become the player he did.

I say raffle it off to the group of young players we have.
Make it anybody's number and we may just end up with another player who happens to develop into champion and who is able to add another chapter to #14's great history.

Monty would be a worthy recipient of Kell's #14 but he may want to keep his premiership winning #.

At the start of every season numbers need to be re-allocated otherwise we would be up to the thousands which would look pretty silly.
In looking at who should and who should not receive coveted jumpers of "champion" players the wearing of premeriership winning Jason Ball's jumper #27 in season 2006 should be carefully selected. Also "captain" Stuart Maxfield's #11 is likely to be a prime target for any new player .

Just give it to anyone. It's going to put too much pressure on the individual who gets it, if we make a big deal about it.
