I agree its time to pass on the jumper
But there is no comparison between the No 14 and the No 4.

Plugger was a great player...but he was a great player at two clubs

Kelly and Skilts were champions at our club, long serving captains of our club, multiple B&Fs, brownlow winners, etc. and played at our club only.

If someone offered me No 4 or No 14...which one would I be most honored by? No question...14!!!

I would like to see it as the captains jumper
Red and white till I die

no, just give them to young players and be done with it. the significance of the number is completely irrelevent compared to the significance of the player that wears it.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

Oh rubbish. Jason Ball's #27? Not a bad player, but don't get too carried away. He's not a retiring champion or anything.

Give 27 to Earl Shaw. Keep it with the ruckmen.

Is that why they gave 8 to Spriggs?

Give #14 to one of the guys we draft this year and let him make his own name in the jumper.

One Swans jumper should not have any higher value placed on it than the others.

I think the number has spent long enough on the sidelines and should be out there on the paddock. Give it to a kid and see if he can make a name for himself in it.

Kel and Skilts are legends of the club of course, but if you retire the jumper, you start falling into the trap of believing that a player is greater than the team. Neither of them were legends when they first started wearing the number, so let someone else have a go. Some will be duds and some might actually turn out pretty good!

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

Has anyone ever heard anything from the players themselves as to whether "its only a number"?

I wouldnt mind hearing from some of them as to what players think....I would think that it has to be more than just a number, but thats my opinion, not something I know for a fact

IMHO, I think they would be more concerned about the jumper than the number.

Collingwood retired 42 after Millane's death, and recently decided to keep it retired, so it will always be remembered as 42, Drink Drive, Bloody Idiot.
