    Aftermatches

    Hey Troy,
Good to see you here with us again.

I just wanted to change the tack a little bit.

Mate, I'll be honest, are you happy with the after-matches this year? Personally I really enjoyed them last year, as the your humour and composure helped us get over some of the traumatic last quarter losses (Geelong, Port, etc etc). They were funny and helped lift our mood heaps, which was great.

But this year we are winning. I'm not just happy; I'm elated. I WANT to talk about as much football as I can. Yet when I want to cheer the players on, I get games of Celebrity Head etc etc on the stage before 2 or 3 players come back and say a few words.

I'm NOT criticising you personally Luffy, as I personally reckon you are the BEST clubmen this club has these days.

I'd like to open things up to the floor about the after-matches this year.

Personally these days I'm doubting whether they are worth paying $30 extra on top of my season ticket.

    Thoughts everyone?

    JF

PS:- The amount of people at the after-matches who talk whilst the players are trying to say something is also annoying. I had a go at one bird (not in Swans gear at all, might I add!) who wouldn't stop. And she nearly bit my head off.

    Julian,

I agree absolutely on the talkers! They piss me off no end.

On a positive, I find it really heartening that pretty much every player has commented on the effect that the chant has on the team .... and Luffy has "led" the questioning in this area quite a few times. Loved Scheider's response on sunday to the question of when was he sure we'd won ... when he heard the crowd doing the countdown. Boy was I happy to see that countdown clock on the big screen. I'd been desperate for the game to end from about the 15 minute mark in the 4th quarter (OK, I admit, half time would have done it for me!) ... but it was worth hanging out for the rest of the game. I was delirious!

I would like to see the players taking questions from the floor.

We've discussed this elsewhere, but I'd like to see more players come to the AM, than to the F&L, but the venue we have really only lends itself to a specific function, it's not really somewhere to go and have a drink ... although it's not bad outside. Maybe the players could be encouraged to go there. It's all really about feeling part of the club, for me.

The AM's seem to be quite well attended. For those who are interested, the raffles are raising quite a bit, the worst is around $280 and the best about $580. We do get the junior players selling the tickets, and it's not the best job in the world, so it would be good if people would spend time talking to them. They are quite happy to chat and it's good for people to take an interest in our up and comers. I know that the Redbacks want to give the raffle a bit more of a plug ... it's also for the players ammenities - either computer stuff for the study facility or memorabilia for the players lounge are the current thoughts.

        Hi JF,
I am very open to suggestions, in fact the more i get the better, i would prefer there be a topic on it so a lot of people can have their say on what they think and what they would like. You have to remember that i have about an hour to kill before the players get there and doing the "musical challenge" or whatever you want to call it seems to work, people have fun and it certainly keeps the masses amused while waiting for the players but i certainly would like some more opinions on what others think so if you would like to start a thread that would be fantastic. On your suggestion of opening the floor a little to others to ask questions, i think that can be good and bad. When i tried that last year there were often questions that would either put the players or the club down and thats not what people want to see, i think this week i may ask a few people to come up and ask a couple of questions each, it also makes my job a lot easier. If you have any other ideas please let me know as i want to make the aftermatch fun and entertaining for everyone and make sure those that are there are pleased and satisfied with what they get.

ive never been to an AM, i dont think its worth my while as it takes me a good 1.5 hours to get home as it is, let alone wait for that to finish as well... it took me 2.5 hours to drive home last friday when training was on, it was a joke!

Luffy the aftermatches do definitely need more input from players - more players and most definitely questions from the floor. Don't mind the pre players attendance entertainment - as long as we get more time from the players.
After all we pay good money for membership - and that is what supporters love - when they are all pumped up after a game and want player response and interaction.
Bron - the players selling the tickets - are okay for conversation - two last week one was communicative - the other not at all. Almost grunted - seems to have a chip on his shoulder. I am talking about 18 year old girls who attempted to talk to the young players - my daughter was one of them and she is a quiet one - I know they don't know that - but honestly one was so rude - he really didn't talk virtually grunted. The other one was really good and made her feel relaxed - it took heaps of guts for her to chat.

Other than the above paragraph - generally the players are great at mixing.
So can you ask for more interaction - attending after functions is good - but we need more players and more responses etc - I know it it hard - but we like to support and we like to think they like us supporting. That is shown by them attending and interaction
              Love those Swans

I will definately look at getting some questions from the floor, providing they are mature and responsible questions and with you wanting more players over i have no control of who or how many come over, i can request which i have done in the past but that is about it, i will try and keep the players there for longer as i know people wait a long time to see them, especially last week which seemed to take forever, if there are any other suggestions on how to fill time please let me know.

Let's see more representation from other parts of the club.
Drag the management out of their ivory towers for a an hour or two so we can hear their comments on the state of the club.

On a similar note some invovlement, kudos to those great volunteers, give 'em a chance to discuss their involvement with the club, perhaps more importantly advertise for more help.

I emailed the club a week or two ago to comment about the fact that we only get two players to show up at the members aftermatch and to comment on how it seems most of the players end up at the Fox & Lion. I was informed that only 2 players are required to attend the Fox & Lion (due to them being a sponsor of the club).

A commitment to sponsors is understandable, but if you don't give back to your members at simple things like an aftermatch (particularly considering that most non match day functions are way too expensive for most to attend) you will lose them. It would be nice to see maybe 4 or 5 players attend the Noble after the game, just to show that the members are important. If more players turn up to the Fox & Lion by choice, then so be it.

As for questions from the floor, we all saw what happened after Rd 22 last year. I get the funny feeling that Jason Ball wouldn't be up for answering supporters questions after his experience that night. It is a good idea, but I also am aware its fraught with danger of becoming ridiculous, so if it was something that wasn't to change, it would be no surprise to me.

I note that we've had coaching staff come to the AMs this year - this is a good thing too. They generally get there before the players too. As has been suggested, it would be interesting if Richard Colless were to make an appearance and grace the members with his presence. He is notable by his absence or early withdrawal from most events (and I include the evening ritzy functions in this comment).

Perhaps members questions could be submitted before the game and intelligent ones read out and answered at the AM.

not a bad idea, TS - maybe luffy can use a special pre-game thread on the forum for questions though that means it'll be hard to get questions relating to that day's game.

penga - someone at the Syd v Rich aftermatch asked Bally (after going through his injuries and so on), and I quote, when he would "start contributing on and off the field". The tone of the questioning suggested that the person involved was questioning Bally's commitment to the club - which is ridiculous, because being injured doesn't mean you're a slacker with a bad attitude.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....
