    OK we won

J Bolton - star - some slaggers of Bolts - you included Des - should line up for extra helpings of humble pie.

LRT - impressive - needs to work on kicking

N Davis best game in Red & White

A wins a win but we were a bit flat - looked like Roos rested Goodes in FP, still Kirk Cresswell etc were good.

    To mark by Powell.

Anyone know prognosis on Saddington and Magic?

Why? When he was being bagged last year he was pretty poor. His early form this year was patchy. Now, he's really stepped up his game, finally. He really needed to do so and now he is. It's taken him long enough but he is now gradually becoming a regularly good player.

What can you say - he was frightening - but had his moments.

Will stay in the side now for a few weeks minimum you'd think.

I'm not very confident in his disposal

There were quite a few demanding he be traded - he was apparently so bad - was just down on confidence.

But you don't lose your ability - given his youth deserved more backing than he got.

            Go sydney go sydney

I believe I was the one who backed the swans to win by 40 pts and was one off. All these doom and gloom people, nwbloods etc didn't think so. Anyway no Oloughlin and Saddington looks like a fantastic effort to me.

Bring on the roos. Sydney by 4 goals!!!

At the time he was skating on thin ice, but now he has improved. Great stuff, but servings of humble pie are irrelevant.

Yeah, it was a great effort. Having seen it so many many many times before, I thought we would struggle coming off a couple of big wins and in slippery conditions. More than happy to be proven wrong!

It won't go down as a classic match, but certainly a very satisfying win. Must have been quite hard to keep themselves "up" for the whole game given how woeful Geelong were in the first quarter as well as coming of three big weeks.

Haven't watched the replay yet but some impressions from the ground:

Kirk, Bolts and Fossie were all very good through the midfield

Powell is going to turn into a wonderful mark once he beefs up a bit

LRT certainly knows how to present himself in the forward 50

Warfe had the best game I've seen him play for a while

Schneider - this kid can do it all. Reliable kick from a "normal" set shot, capable crumber, superb long kicker, decent mark for his size...

Kennelly - if he isn't the best kick of a football in the AFL he must be pretty close

Mathews - recapturing his form of 2001. Another very solid dependable game and he certainly puts his body on the line time after time

Defence - stating the obvious I know but we desparately need another strong tall. Barry did his best but was never going to contain Graham. Just too tall and strong.

Stevens - pretty good first half, though faded later

Definitely missed the class of O'Loughlin and Williams once he went off. Would have thumped them with those two in the team.

LRT - Great debut. 2 goals and showed he was a good mark. With more game time will turn into a handy footballer.

Powell - Did well again. The small amount of game time he got will only help in the long run. Is going to be a very hard player to out mark.

Davis - Well played most of the game in the midfield and it showed with this easily his best match to date. With more fitness he'll become a very handy player to have in the midfield.

Leo Barry - Out sized by Graham but never let him get away. Good again coming out of the backline.

Jude Bolton - Class player today, finally showing his potental.

Kirk - How much has he improved this season, couldn't think what would of happened if he wasn't out there.

Mathews - Well he is in good form and playing a more midfield role than ever before.

Cresswell - Come on son play another season

Overall a good win, but yet again we CAN get better

At the AM, Steve Malaxo said that Magic had hurt his knee at training. They tested him yesterday morning but decided not to play him, so doesn't sound too serious. Saddo has an injured groin. Again, a training injury. Didn't seem concerned. I presume they will be OK for next week, but that's just my interpretation.

I dare you to find a single post by me that bags him (as opposed to bagging PERFORMANCES) all this year He was one who needed to step up this year and to his credit he DID!

Not a bad debut by The Hyphen. Knows how to take a mark, and pretty good footy awareness - even more impressive considering his late introduction to the game.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

                          Shameful denial!

I'm with you Bron - wish we had an archive of some threads going back to end of last season and trade time.

I cannot remember all the culprits - Steve was one - not many defenders of Bolts.

As I recall there were quite a few who were absolutely flabbergasted that Bolton was given a 2-year contract at the end of last year.

A trade, delisting or at best a 1-year deal were the popular options.

There's an obvious distinction between good players who are low on form/confidence and duds with no future. I say obvious, but a lot of people seem to struggle with it.

How well would we be going if the majority had had their way and Goodes, Bolton, O'Loughlin, Mathews etc were currently playing at other clubs?

Very few players are consistent before they are 23 or so. As I understand it from people it actually takes around 5 pre-seasons to build up the strength and fitness for AFL.

Actually in the pre-season games last year Bolts was burning. His confidence was shattered early in the year - Eade played he and Fosdike in the wrong spots. He needs to be in the guts where he can attack the footy - he just isn't suited to a flank.

                              Still its old stuff now.
