I find Collingwood supporters somewhat benign at matches. People around us at Colonial were not even cheering Pies goals.

I find Essendon has the most oafish and out and out violent supporters in the league. With Richmond the most mental, and Carlton the most arrogant.

Port's supporters were very tame in comparison. Or simply weren't there. There were empty seats everywhere (I know comments like that upset Port people too )

You are the only person who uses the footy as a change to have a jog. You must do hundreds of kilometres each season around Footy Park, going from end to end depending on where the Power are kicking.

Are there several of you who do that? Why do you choose to go end to end?

There is alot more people than me, around 40 hard core end to enders (grog squad). Comes from a SANFL tradition, which also involves Centrals and North Adelaide groggies in the SANFL. I only go end to end with games with small crowds, as you would know, it is not easy lugging around a big flag and trying to find a seat down the other end.
More than most teams, Port Adelaide fans prefer to stand.

My experiences at the Port game were similiar to you even though we were in a different sector of the ground . See my previous posting. One thing that I also noticed was the parochi alism of the South Aussie media eg Hewitt is a South Aussie while Philippoussis is an Australian player. However , this approach may not be unique to South Australia alone.
Coming from NSW, I find ever state's people far more parochial than those in Sydney, especially at Swans' crowds where a sizeable portion of the crowd are displanted interstaters who have latched onto the Swans to get their dose of footy.

Sure we had 80000 screaming fans at the State of Origin, but how many NSWmen/women actually give 2 hoots whether we are from NSW or not. You never hear "We love Waugh 'caus he's a NSWman" at the cricket like you do in Melbourne.

Especially at state-focussed clubs like the Crows and Eagles, you very much get the mentality that it is "us vs them". To me this smacks of a great deal of insecurity. SA football followers take the cake on that score.

Half the fun of being an AFL fan is going interstate and copping ****. We do when we go away..the only difference is, we don't go home and sulk and post about how feral the opposition fans are. We cop it, and give it back, and accept it as part of footy. What did you expect here? the red carpet treatment?

And you're right Julian, your team is capable of beating anyone on its day..but i guess saturday wasn't was it. Would all the posts here be so negative against us if you'd won?

we won..you lost..get over it and move on...
Chris, the posts would have possibly been far far worse. As Port would have probably lost top spot. And a crucial home match against an opponent they'd have considered beatable at the start of the season. And I have been letting them ALL know about it!!!!!

Why is it that there are security guards posted behind away Cheer Squads at Footy Park.? Because of the problems they have experienced. Had we won, I'd really have been in for it. Not that I really mind. But I'm not your typical Sydney supporter.

You do have one point though about the lack of tribalism of many Sydney-based supporters, which is actually quite distinct even in comparison with our Melbourne-based ex-South Melbourne supporters. If somebody has a go at the Melbourne-based Swans supporters they'll regret it. Especially if South Melbourne identity Mad Mick had anything to do with it.

In Sydney I've often been the only one to stand up to opposition yobs, which has often gotten me a reputation as a troublemaker in the eyes of the barracking-unfriendly SCG Security Nazis. Hence I have more problems at the SCG with opposition supporters than anywhere (insert Jemma's rant about what happened against the Bulldogs where I nearly got my head smashed in).

In Sydney when an away fan has a go more often than not the mentality is to try and ignore them, hoping they'll go away. This has led to many occasions where drunks up from Melbourne have gone out of their way to stand behind the Swans Cheer Squad and heckle them. When nobody has fired any retorts back, the drunks know they have fair game and get even more obnoxious. Once we had security called to stop an Essendon supporter going totally feral at us, then I got told off by security for retaliating.

Why are Sydney supporters not as tribal as those in southern states? Well, we are probably more individualist in mentality. When you consider that women make up nearly 50% of our membership-base (and gay men another 10-15% at least!!!!),that may have something to do with it. There were about 50-70 Swans fans scattered around Footy Park on Saturday. Basically everybody stayed in their set seats, except several who had come across from Melbourne.

Chris, this is a Swans messageboard. And we can discuss about what we like I guess. Just as you lot had a whinge about Channel 10 after your Tassie game on PowerfromPoet.com, we are discussing a matter than was relevant to us, Port supporters booing our goals.

Hopefully things will return to normal this weekend. And I can have Port as my second side again.

Still, you avoided my quips about South Australians, didn't you buddy? Even you'll admit that there are huge inferiority complexes in SA!

JF, inferior to nobody, and wearing better clothes as well!

Anyway back to the original post! 8 12 , hardley accurate kicking. I remember Sydney fans calling us point power last time our two sides met at Football Park.
So after all that, booing while your guys had a shot for goal just might of worked

I think spectators booing opposition goals or good play by the opposition is simply bad sportsmanship. There is no other explanation or excuse for it.

hey, i'm just saying, you guys being a bit put off by us booing is a bit..well, bit of a non issue.
i think your posts are good and valid. And i feel for you with your problems in sydney with the cheersquad.I'd hate to be up there and have to deal with that every second week.

And you're dead right..there are people in this state..(not me, but others...) that don't seem to realise there are other states outside of SA....they suffer from major inferiority complexes

If it wasn't for the football, I don't think id be here...there are plenty things wrong with SA..
