I'm glad we've seen threads like this, as to me it is a good way to look back on a sseason that has given me some unbelievable memories, both in terms of my personal adventures and some of the matches I've attended.
Highlights to me were
-The trip to Adelaide for the Crows match. Had fun chatting with the locals in the Crows Shed pre-match, then a spine-tingling game of football played in an awesome yet convivial atmosphere. It was only then they despite losing I really saw our team as a serious Premiership thread. A really awesome weekend, made better for me due to visiting Kangaroo Island on the days before. Meeting Greg Bell and the game who went over for Breakfast was also very enjoyable.
-The trip to Brisbane for the Lions match. An awesome match at the best arena in the AFL with great company. We chanted and sung ourselves hoarse, of course with the help of the Anti-Lions Cheer Squad (all resplendant in t-shirts with the letter "S" "Y" etc on the front). The rain fell, and we all turned into "Poncho Men". Classic stuff all around, including the pizza gathering at Fortitude Valley and clapping the players at the airport after the game. Was in tears of joy and disbelief after the match.
-The Port match. Met up the Cheer Squad travellers on the Saturday night for dinner, before going out. Met up everyone for breakie the next morning in North Adelaide, before undertaking the most cult day of the season. Arrived at Port Adelaide outer Army's BBQ armed with booze. Bumped into Bron as well, where I was given more alcohol. Walked into ground rather drunk.
Awesome match, epic atmosphere, great Swans cheer squad, and the best effort from the Swans this year. The second quarter was just magic. As close to footballing perfection as you can get from our young team of goers. The second half was pure torture. I was shaking at the end, such were my nerves.
Am epic day, made all the better by the company I was with. We ended up at Pasta Pasta on South Terrace. Yummy, yummy, yummy.
-vs Carlton in Melbourne. The day the Swans took over Princes Park. The concourse area in the Legends Stand was about 80-90% RED & WHITE. And the Cheer Squad the best of the season, with Peter Hatley and me with the drum going at it hammer and tong (of course with the help of Gemma, Robbie Ando etc etc).
Yes, there have been some bad days.
Port in Adelaide in July was the worst for me. I had to lug ALL the flagpoles across myself. And had to drag people out of the crowd to get the banner up. After the game when trudging sopping wet towards where I'd be picked up I proceded to have the bag the big flags were in break, so that they all fell in a puddle. A dreary boring slushfest, made worse by Wanganeen's diving, and the Port Adelaide supporters who were whinging at me.
The Hawthorn loss in August was the most gauling. Especially with so many of our club's heros there in attendance.
The Collingwod match sucked as well. Huge crowd, but virtually empty Cheer Squad. And everything sopping wet. Crap effort of bumbling wet-weather football. Stage-fright, yes I think so.
But overall this season has been one of unbelievable highlights. Stunning come from behind efforts in the last quarters, crowd records falling everywhere, existing players turning the corner, new stars emerging and blossoming under Roos.
There is a LOT still to be done. And the successes of this year will count to nothing come next March. But if you told me in April that I'd be experiencing what I have experienced this season, I'd have had you locked up. Especially after our 1-3 start after the Hawthorn match at the G.
My message to the players- you are the very lifeblood through which I breathe. To me my football club is EVERYTHING! Remember, to win a game of football you have to want to be there and enjoy the experience. Just go out and have fun, fellas! And let's go one better in 2004!
