    Singing/chanting

    People,

Now it is the off season we need to give some thought about our singing and chanting and come up with some strategies. We should take heed of the English soccer fans and the barmy army (obviously excluding the bad language and anything offensive). I have tried singing alternative songs during the games and either get strange looks or laughed at. We obviously have to keep it relatively simple but we can build on our repetoire as we get better. I know that the Manchester United fans post the songs on a fan's website , they include the words and then state "sung to the tune of..". They also print off the words and hand them out before the games (mainly at the pubs), it quite often starts at one section of the crowd and eventually most people join in.
If we move on from "sydney" clap, clap , clap and "ssssyyyyddddnnnneeeeyyyyyyyyy" it will set us apart from the other clubs' fans.
    I have sung:
"all we are saying is give us a goal" - sung to John Lennon's give peace a chance
"we love you sydney, we do, we love you sydney we do, we love you sydney,we do, ohhhh sydney we love you" - (not sure of the name of the tune - will try to find out and advise) - any player's name can be substituted in place of Sydney - "we love you goodesy...."
I have also tried to get a chant of "come on you reds" going
I think it is worth a try.

The CS does actually do this - and IMHO its more fun singing than just start clap/chant jobs.

Things like "You are my Sydney, my only Sydney", singing to the tune from the Great Escape, the list goes on...

    I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

Huh the guys in the cheer squad have tried and get the same response.

The two times I have joined Julian and the gang we have tried our guts out and all we get are stares and laughter. People actually think we are amusing. But that's Sydney people for you.

They have some really good and funny songs though and we sang them on the way back on Saturday night.

The only way you can really get people to sing etc is if either:

      a) Words are put up on the scoreboard
      b) Print out a huge amount of leaflets with the words on them. A bit of an expensive venture but people could bring them along to the games with them.

I was also thinking about getting more Irish folk involved. Maybe go to the Irish pubs and recruit a few lads? I am sure they would be keen and once you get a core of about 20-30 people all singing the domino effect begins.

Apart from that, I don't know what else..

I reckon if we co-ordinate it it can be done.
The words can be published on this site (Mr or Ms Moderator how about setting up a link for this?) people can then print off their own copies and have the words to hand, we should start with simple things and then move on to bigger and better songs.
I also think that persistence is the key. Don't be defeatist and blame it on fickle Sydneysiders, we have about 20,000 members so surely we can get the message to them. Perhaps if we keep singing the new songs (and not give up) then others will wnat to learn them and join in. Anyone remember the group of Aussie supporters during the last test at the SCG, they got up and gagve it back to the barmy army every time, it obviously took some organising and all they did was copy the BA's songs?
Another thing that bugs me is that the Sydney chant goes up after a goal and stops as the umpire bounces the ball , that means that the chant is not heard by the tv viewers as it is only done during the adverts. We have to be loud and we have to be proud.
If we get good at it we can even get songs for the players. My brother (who is not a member) came along on Saturday and was chanting "did you come in a taxi" to the Lions fans - meaning that they were quiet and there didn't seem to be many of them, you can even go to "did you come on a skateboard?"

Trust me we have been trying for a few years now in the Swans CS in both Melb and Syd, with no luck.

Creating threads with song words has crossed my mind but we need a **** load people to join up etc. We need to get everyone that sits behind the cheer squad involved. We cant have small pockets because its useless. The message and effect doesnt come across and it becomes one big mess.

I also think the SCG is really poor for singing and chanting. Hopefully more games are played at SA as the atmosphere there is awesome. Never forget the roar after Ablett kicked a goal.

We don't give up, Julian and the gang keep going. Its just annoying when you try to get the crowd involved and all you get are stares.

But it will happen in the near future and we will have one of the best crowds in the AFL. We already do..as evident by Collingwood who have copied a few ideas and chants from the Sydney CS.

I think we've got to keep the momentum going. We're onto something here.
We sit in the MA Noble and I know most of our group will sing along and we can gradually involve the people around us.
Robbieando is onto something, we can work on that song to "sydneyise" it but it can be done.
As the saying foes "rome wasn't built in a day", let's start with "we love you sydney..." and move on from there.
I presume that the pre-season game against the Bombers will be played at North Sydney oval in Feb, we can start it there. That will be a good forum for introducing new stuff as it is small and folk can hear what is being sung.
Anyway must go and do the dutiful wife bit and get hubby's dinner ready as he is due back soon.

You are on to something, you obviously know the tunes from Rangers' songs

                    How about..

"hello hello we are the sydney swans
hello hello we are the sydney swans
we're gonna sing with all our might

Well, as the others have mentioned, it is VERY hard to get chants/songs going at Swans games. I will gladly help out when I'm sitting with the cheersquad, but there is simply not enough people joining in. I reckon you need at LEAST 20-30 people joining in for it to get up enough momentum. Any less and it just doesn't work....

Surely amongst the 20,000 members, there are FIFTY who would do it? I reckon that's all it'd take.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

it also helps when the chanters are in the same relative section instead of being spread around the ground

is there anyone here from the O'Rielly stand? How did they get the "one Tony Lockett" song started??? They got that going and it really took off. Maybe we can employ their help.

Easy most people knew the fairly easy chorus "theres only 1 Tony lockett, ooooone Tony loooockett"

If people know what we are singing, then more will join. Thats why atm only "Syddddneeey" chant is sang by all.

even though it is easy, they had to start it somehow. They would have needed a few people involved. I just wonder how they did that side of it. I agree to get things going we need to start with something easy and progress.
