What a tosser Aker is. Lethal will not be amused.

      Aker blows Lappin smokescreen
      By Darren Cartwright
      September 24, 2003

MAVERICK midfielder Jason Akermanis blew Brisbane's grand final smokescreen yesterday by confirming injured teammate Nigel Lappin had damaged ribs but was likely to play in Saturday's AFL decider against Collingwood.

This came less than 24 hours after coach Leigh Matthews cleverly danced around naming Lappin's injury and basically ruled him out of the grand final.

And less than 24 hours after the club officially listed the problem for a second time as a corked hip, Akermanis fessed up. The 2001 Brownlow medallist, who likes to speak his mind, inadvertently uncovered the Lions' bold attempt to hide Lappin's injury from the media, and more importantly, from Collingwood.

"I think he'll be fine," Akermanis said on a Brisbane radio station yesterday.

"Obviously he's going to be in some discomfort, but then again probably every player is, unfortunately, just in the ribs.

"No, there is nothing wrong with his hip, mate you know the old thing. It's a broken finger, yeah, he's got a crook back now."

Lappin sustained the injury in the final quarter of last Saturday night's preliminary final against Sydney after being collected heavily by teammate Shaun Hart.

The dual All-Australian's predicament is a touchy subject at the Lions.

They are mindful if he does play under duress that his injured ribs will be seriously put to the test by opponents in the opening minutes of the grand final.

The Lions even went to the extent on Monday of strongly discouraging photographers from taking shots of Lappin as he arrived at the Gabba to meet the club physios.

Lions officials offered themselves as shields to stop the photographers.

Having to decide a player's fate in grand final week is not new for Matthews.

In 1990 at Collingwood, Matthews put Alan Richardson (shoulder) through a rigid fitness test during the midweek training session and in a line-ball decision ruled him out.

But Akermanis is not the only Lions player who believes Lappin has the pain threshold to play on grand final day.

Skipper Michael Voss said he was unsure of the injury but thought Lappin was in good enough health to be included tomorrow night when the side was announced.

"I know Leigh said he was unlikely but I am anticipating he will play," said Voss.

Bullocking forward Jonathan Brown said Lappin was such a vital cog in the midfield wheel that the club had to do everything possible to get him on the ground.

"He is a tough bloke and I think he will play," he said.

Yes, they would. It's called "Le Macdo" in France. With strange local delicacies such "Pomme Frites" and "Les Big Macs".

Hope they don't find out that 'McVin" is actually wine at French Maccas.

Last week's The Fat - Aker announces Crouch is the worst kind of tegger who never wants to get the ball himself.

Syd v Bris - Aker gets benched after Crouch blankets him AND GETS MORE POSSESSIONS TO THAT POINT!!!

          What a fool!

I saw him on last week's (Melbourne) Footy Show, and was appalled as to what a total smart-arse he was.

He made really painful remarks that one of the questions asked was "one of the most intelligent ever asked of him by a football."

Then he started referring to Sam Newman as a "fool" for no reason.

That guy seriously has to get off his high horse. I don't know how Lethal puts up with him.

(Maybe the Pie fans were right to boo him after last year's GF)

He is a tool. He needs to stop trying to be smart every time he opens his mouth.

I think he wants to be controversial and demonstrate what an individual he is. He can be quite amusing but I really wanted to slap him after listening to him on the Fat (23/9/03) when he referred to Crouch as that old hack and saying that he doesn't get held as much at home by his wife (can't say I blame her!). From where I was sitting it was Yakermanis who was doing the mongreling and there were certainly a few stray elbows in Jarrod's direction. I was impressed that Jarrod did not rise to the bait and treated it (and him) with contempt.
