By front-loading, I mean demand a 3 year deal worth $300,000 for the first year, $50,000 for the 2nd and 3rd years.
If we get him for nothing in the pre-season draft it will be a great pick up. Luckily the other team with enough cap room is Carlton who will take Stevens with their pick.Comment

The other option is to wait for the pre-season draft.
We had like the 4th or 5th pick last year if I recall correctly when othe teams had filled their lists in the end of season draft....The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.Comment

He is more likely to take the punt that all the club places are fully loaded or the clubs have no salary cap space and go into the PSD.
I agree the only real threat would be Geelong but it would be a huge gamble by them considering that he baulked going originally. Also plenty of ways where he can place restrictions on himself that will suit us picking him up and no one else beforehand.
Have to say though, this would be a very very big pick up for us in what he brings to the side.

I think our chances of getting him are better in the ND than the PSD... realistically, the only clubs even half-likely to be interested are Carlton, Geelong, Melbourne and Sydney.
Carlton are out - they'll go with either Stevens or Rawlings in the PSD and their only pick before 60 in the national is #2.
Melbourne have pick 36 - I guess it's possible that they'd take Hall... but I doubt it. Big risk, however, of Melbourne taking him in the PSD.
Geelong have picks 38 and 42 - there's a higher risk here of them sneaking in before us... but in the PSD, they'd be certain to take him. Absolutely certain.
I'm quite confident our best chance of getting Hall is through the national draft. We hate Anthony Rocca

We hate scumbag Gaspar

I think Hall's best chance of coming to Sydney is via the PSD. This way, like DST has said, he can frontload his contract and hope Geelong and Melbourne cant afford him. Also, doesnt going into the ND mean that clubs can pay him the minimum wage for the 2 year contract that all new draftees sign? Someone correct me if Im wrong.Comment

I'm not too fussed about the Ray Hall thing, actually... If he nominates for either draft and he's still around when we have a pick, then I wouldn't mind the club picking him up. Tall, can play a bit... but definitely not a "get at all costs" player.
I won't be losing any sleep over it.
177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

BTW, my $300,000 + $50,000 + %50,000 figures were just examples. But I'd say hes the equivalent of a $150K p.a. player.
A 3 year front loaded contract would be ideal for us. Because we have lots of cap room now, but may not in a couple of years if alll these young guys keep improving.Comment

does anyone actually know for certain that we do have space in the salary cap. They were raising this issue for why we did so poorly in the trading periodVisit my eBay store -

we were under 100% of the cap this year and still have the bulk of (if not all) of the 15% allowance available to us next year
we might not have been active in trade week for a couple of reasons:
1. Budgetary, as has been reported we experienced financial difficulties this year and the option of throwing money at a big name player wasn't available to us (not that stevens, rawlings, or brown wanted to leave melbourne anyway)
2. We have a young playing list that Roos is happy to top up with youngsters from the draft as opposed to 2nd rate players from opposition clubs
3. Our list is probably still generally underrated and aside from picks we have very little to trade. no other teams wanted to touch our dead wood and there's no point in trading our current players if they are undervalued and no good deals were on the table.
in respect of hall, i'm suprised that they didn't throw the 3rd round pick they received for stevens to richmond. maybe they weren't as interested as the media reported or maybe they think they can get him for free in the psd.
the 2nd option seems a strange one though given that our pick in the psd will be much later than last years and melbourne and geelong would almost certainly pick him before us
in answer to your question sharpie, if we didn't have enough cap space to fit ray hall on to the list then we're in big troubleComment
