In Swans history getting Greame Teasedale etc. for John Pitura has to be the best, but more recently . . .

Will Barry Hall prove to be of more value than Tony Lockett?

Schauble was a great trade for us

considering Collingwood got *giggle Leon Davis with the draft pick we gave them

but i'm sure there was another draft pick thrown at them from us...can anyone confirm that?

As well as draft #34 which they used on "Neon Leon" we sold them Ben Kinnear, I was pretty pissed at the time because he was a high draft choice at the time, but in the end he hasn't set the world alight so we did well.
Schauble isn't quick but does hold and organise the defence in a most Dunkletesque way.

It was actually Mark Kinnear that we sent to Collingwood, not Ben. And given that Mark had already walked out on the club the season before and never even got into training with the Pies once he arrived, he was certainly no loss.

In particular hearing him bull**** about how unfair it was for Nick Davis to want to come home, especially after Rocca buggered off south and the Barry Mitchell thing. Such incredible hypocracy!!

Not a chance. The only thing is, we're going to have Bazza for a lot longer, he's an excellent footballer but nowhere near Lockett, and I don't think you can have a more valuable player, than a bloke who is the greatest goalkicker of all time. After all, goals are the things that win games of football.

The big fella set Aussie Rules alight in Sydney, I don't think there would have been anywhere near the number of people interested in the game, had he not gone up there. If he wasn't there in '96, we would've been very lucky to make the finals IMO, so therefore a lot of the 'badwagoners' would never have started following the club. He and Barassi turned the whole place around.

I like this! Sure, Lockett is the greatest goalkicker of all time, I don't deny that, but If we do win a flag with Bazza, not to mention the first in 70 years, you would have to say he was of more value to US than Plugger, given he would have been here for a lot longer.

im one of those bandwagoners that has been hooked since '96. Plugger certainly played a huge part, esp that day when he kicked the record.. geez, in 1997, i even named my little silky terrier "Plugger"

On Lockett - Hall, we shouldn't be judging their value to the club on how many people they attracted though the gates, but their value to the club on the field. So far Lockett is the better deal, but in 10 years time how do we know what Hall could of done for the club. In any case Lockett was a Full Forward while Hall will play mostly at Centre Half Forward.

Why not?- they are both valid measures of "value".

For mine, I don't understand this incessant need to compare and come up with an answer as to who is "better" or "more valuable".

They are different players, playing in different (mini) eras at the club. It is doubtful that a Hall would have had the impact that Lockett had back in 1995, while Hall probably better suits the more flexible game style and "no-star" culture of the club at the moment.

I suspect we'll look back on both in the fullness of time and remember their contributions fondly.

The important thing to remember is that while Lockett kicked a lot more goals, Hall sets up a lot more. Really, it would not surprise me if Hall contributed to 120 goals this year - that's a massive effort. He really was robbed by Tredrea and Tarrant of his rightful spot in the AA team this year.

Because when you make a trade you don't get a player because of their marketability, but for their playing value. In any case to compare Lockett and Hall on their "market" value to the club then Lockett wins hands down, but thats not the reason we got Lockett we got him to play football and as such he should be judged on what he did on the field. What is done off the field can only be seen as an added bonus.

I suspect we'll look back on both in the fullness of time and remember their contributions fondly.

So far so good with both. Lockett was just what this club needed and he delivered. Hall is what we needed and so far he has delivered. In many years from now I have no doubt that both deals to get them here will be looked upon as masterstrokes, that gave the club something we badly needed - a winning team, with hopefully a premiership or two thrown in as well.

I think people underestimate the number of goals Lockett used to set up. Taking into account goals kicked and assists, I suspect Lockett would average more per game (than anyone pretty much).

As for value to the club - how do you measure that? It's pretty subjective and I'm not sure if it is really that meaningful. Lockett's contribution to the club in his short time was fantastic, and given the way Hall is going, I suspect his contribution will also be fantastic.
