Bob Skilton also shares the same opinion.
With the greatest respect for Skilts he never saw Laurie Nash play. Many, including Laurie reckon Laurie was the best all round sportsman and AFL footlballer they ever saw.

Max Papley was a chamapion who wasted a chance to be the greatest ever. Was there ever a lazier fottball. I don't think so.

BTW I saw every game Papley played and watched many of his training sessions if that is what you call them.

I think Skilts is the greatest player. He played at the same time as Papley.

        Open to debate.

This really is a hard one to answer. On my first instinct I would say Kel.

But then there's Plugger, and I remember watching Roos, from the Dougie Walters stand and his read of the play was something special.

But for my era, besides Kel. I have to go with Dunks. Not a good kick, but so soild a back man. Not as exciting as our current crop, but I would have put the house on him most of the time

But I have different opinions to those of you who have been around for longrer.

Is there any other jumper in the AFL that has four Brownlow medals and Stephan Allender associated with it?

Must be 14, Lockett was a great player but there are plenty of numbers that overall have been graced by great players that should be of equal standing. No 2, 3, 7 and 11 amongst them

Throw in Heuskes and 39 has good novelty value

              Gunn.

On Laurie Nash- My dad says that he was the best of all time.
Says he was that tough that Jack Dyer would not go near him.

On Papley - also agree - brilliant but lazy at training, when he trained.

Yes my father is always talking about Max Papley, he must have been very gifted, so therefore Number 11 gives it a shake. Number 10 hast to be right up there as bob Pratt wore it. My Grandfather (Nico's Father) always said Laurie Nash was the best he'd seen.

I went for 14 because of SKilton and Kelly. But I also put Number 4, a very close second as it was worn by the most unbelievable footballer the game has ever seen, IMO.

IMHO it has to be either 14, 4 or 11 as the most famous number for the club.

My dad says much the same.

What number was Clegg? I seem to recall 25 or 23.

Disn't Laurie Nash himself say that everytime he looked in the mirror he saw the greatest player ever?

I believe Ron Clegg was number 23.

I know an old fella who reckons he was better than Skilts - just didn't train well and not very focussed on footy.

I don't have room to list all the jobs that Cleggy had at various times.

To me, no. 14, and 10 would be the highest valued jumpers at the Swans.

                      Cheers.

Hey Reggi, what about number 13, Rod Carter and you said who has heard of John Rantall, he won a brownlow, won the best and fairest 5 times, has played the most games for the Swans with 260, he was also a captain and is in the Team of the Century, just a lttle bit of info for you.

Only problem with that Troy is that Rantall never won a Brownlow, the rest of it is perfect. On Rantall he is my fathers favorite player and I have heard endless stories about him. Needless to say my father was heartbroken when he quit the club to go to North as part of their buying under the "10 year rule". Proving how honest he was, after winning the premiership with North in 75 he came came to South in 76 like he promised because he wanted 1 premiership before he retired.

Sorry Robbie, you are right, for some reason I got him confused with Peter Bedford so other than not winning a Brownlow he also never won a B & F but he did captain the club and does hold the games record, I better get my info right next time before I say anything...!

Thats OK, even I stuffed up on him winning Best and Fairest, heck I was sure he won one at least, I must be getting on in my older age. I wasn't having a go at you by the way Troy, in fact its good to see that the current and former players of the club since we moved to Sydney, have a fair idea of our history. Keep it up.

Still the guy is a club legend and since Bayes, Kelly and Cressa never quite made it to the record, its going to be a while until we have a player who will get as close as the above players did. Plus to Captain this side puts him in pretty good company
