Thought Maxfield had a shocker - couldn't seem to get into it and the Lions players easily ran around him.

Interesting that Walls said early in the game that Saddington really needs to stand up this year. He has been around for a long time and needs to take the next step from a fringe player to a top-liner. Later in the game he commented how weak one of his efforts against Pike was. Saddington really didn't show much tonight - certainly didn't help out all his supporters on this board. Certainly needs to improve - hopefully he can next week.

Heath James played a good defensive effort, although he was a bit slow at ground level. Should never have let Aker get that goal in the 3rd qtr.

I think our midfield did pretty well tonight, which was rather pleasing. Fosdike, Williams and McVeigh were very good. Mathews obviously still a bit underdone. J Bolton seemed pretty ordinary tonight, and was nowhere near Voss (whom he seemed to be matching up against) although a really nice goal at the end.
Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

IT would have been good to win but some good things did come out of the night. Don't worry everyone we will still win the premiership this year.

What I don't understand is why Jason can miss such a crucial goal in the dying minute(s).
Yet last year while he was out injured he was telling the players that opportunities like this (finals) don't come around too often, and you have to seize the moments when presented.
I know this wasn't as important as the finals, but the same principle should apply.

Anyway, I'm over it now. It was just disappointing.

        Better luck next time.

PS. I've decided I hate the Lions.
Dirty players! Especially those Bulldogs (Scott bros).

Ball was obviously down on match fitness (not really an excuse for the kick, however). Still, with Goodesy, and Doyle to come back in (next week?) we're looking good for ruck depth.

Running the premiers to 2 pts at their home ground isn't too bad a start, and the best bit was that we seem to of uncovered some depth for the first time in history - McVeigh, Bevan, Powell, and LRT all did well.

          Heath James was a stand-out.

Just stepping in for someone who contributes a lot to this board.

A web board may not be a "company" but its an offshoot of society and as such, is governed by a certain ettiquette. People need to earn respect before they talk loud and loose - if they want to be part of the community.

I thought J Bolton was alot better in the second half (kicked a goal as well). I cant remember seeing too much of him in the first half though.

I thought Heath James was outstanding. He seemed to hold is own against all his opponents and very rarely got outmarked, if at all. A bit unfair with regards to his effort in trying to stop Aker though - an oval ball dribbling along the ground is Aker's territory.

Leo Barry was also one of our best tonight. Took some very courageous marks as he usually does, and kept Pike quiet(er) after it looked like he would take over the game.

Agree with the comments on Maxfield's game tonight. He had two or three clangers in the first half when we were trying to play the possession game.

Lets hope Davis' injury is not too serious.

The commentators spoke alot of how Brisbane just belt the ball forward at the stoppages, and then swarm on it with numbers. This is just so effective, so why dont we seem to be doing it as much as I think we should?

They mentioned he got a bruised hip. Dont know to what extent though. Without Schneider and Davis, we lack some spark in the team which was dearly felt in the third quarter.

He didn't miss it because he didn't care - but probably because he was physically shattered. That's not necessarily an excuse, but certainly part of the reason. Most of our guys had run themselves into the ground by the end of the game and for that, at least, we should be proud of them.

The four points aside, maybe it will be better in the long run that they just lost this one. It should give them confidence that they can so nearly match the best yet steel them to realise that it can all be whipped away in the blink of an eye.

I am always very nervous at the start of a season because I generally have no idea what to expect. Although it is still very early in the year, that game demonstrated that

                a) they still believe in themselves
                b) they are still willing to sacrifice their physical safety at times for the good of the team
                c) their skills are still ten times better than they were two years ago, notwithstanding the odd glitch
                d) we truly do have a handful of youngsters who can play at that level - missing players can never be used as an excuse but throw Schaubs, Schneider, Tiger, Doyle, Fixter into the mix and we are developing a very good squad, not just a very good first 22.

He was a bit more involved in the second half, but really didn't seem to add a lot, like he did last year.

James was outstanding in his defensive role. With the Aker one, I thought he could have a bit more of an effort to get the ball before Aker kicked it forward - just seemed a fraction slow to turn and jump on the ball. Not overly surprising though given his legs - I suspect his mobility is not what it was once.

Leo Barry was also one of our best tonight. Took some very courageous marks as he usually does, and kept Pike quiet(er) after it looked like he would take over the game.
Looks like he will continue with his form from last year, which is good.

Agree with the comments on Maxfield's game tonight. He had two or three clangers in the first half when we were trying to play the possession game.

Yes - what was it diagnosed as? All I heard was a corky.

Yes, they do that fabulously well and how good are Black and Voss at getting the ball and still being able to get it out to a team mate or kick it forward despite under huge pressure. I thought these two guys, Pike and Michael were key for them, with good games by Leppitsch and Johnson also.

Agree! He seemed to get a fist to the ball every time. Saddo could take lessons. Wouldn't be surprised if Heath stays in the 22 from now on (yes, wood has been touched).

I thought exactly the same thing myself about 10 minutes ago.

Agree with the rest of your comments re what the game demonstrated too.

Liz, I don't think that was the point schneidergirl was making, I agree with her.
j.ball had that opportunity to make his own, and he didn't... in other words 'practise what you preach'- not saying he didn't care - as he wouldn't be out there if he didn't....

Yeah, Christi Malthouse reported it as a corky, though I would take that with a grain of salt. If its serious enough to keep him out for the rest of the game, Im expecting that he wont be fit to play Freo next week.

I forgot to mention Brett Kirk in my earlier post. He seemed to get alot of the ball, so Im not sure if he was playing an exclusive tagging game, or allowed to go get the ball as well.

On Bazza, I thought Michael had the better of him in the end. Not alot of his leads were honoured, and Brisbane managed to block up our forward 50 very quickly.

Micky O looked like he was on song - showed flashes of his brilliance, and one would think he will get better with a few more games under his belt - as long as he doesnt get hurt.

O'Keefe was ok as well. A few missed shots at goal, but presented himself very well and took a few good grabs on the lead.

Im just left wondering how it would have been with Lynch and Brown playing. I suspect the score would have been drastically different, and our outlook for the season wouldnt be as rosy. Freo will be another test for us next week.
