As this thread clearly displays the person with the strong views on that is Steve. I have had some disagreements on the issue, and believe a player has been undeservedly singled out, that didn't deserve it.

How so? I don't think he is being singled out for unfair comment, just warrented comments regarding the position he plays. Whether pointing out that I think Saddo isn't the one who should be playing at CHB in our best 22 is unfair, I don't know. But I sure as hell think I'm allowed to point out that Craig Bolton should be CHB with Schauble at FB. If you think thats unwarrented, well take up netball.

Even when it is obvious to him that he lies, he in no way points out that he has made a mistake, but continues to equivocate and rationalise to somehow justify his statements. Cannot help himself, and clearly a person of very very low character.

Really this topic is getting out of hand. Reggi, you just seem to be spoiling for a fight on this topic. Because not once can I recall anyone saying Saddo should be dropped from the side. The general issue, is whether Saddo at CHB is better than Saddo else where in the team such as a half back flank or on a wing. I think everyone should take a step back and think about what is really going on here.

I believe that some on this site are really touchy about other having ANYTHING bad to say about any player on this team. I want to raise what I believe to be faults in the side and my ideas on how the side can be improved, but it seems its getting to a stage where every player in untouchable and bad comment paint you out as the devil himself.

My views on Saddington and Reggi's comments, as Reggi himself said, should not be confused and are completely separate issues.

As I have in the past I'm more than happy to put my balls on the line and express the view that Saddington can and will develop into a good CHB.

Personally I think he has been marked fairly harshly - even after seeking clarification Nick confirmed for me that his main concerns over Saddington's game are his body work/strength and a tendancy to attempt to mark and not spoil (a query over lack of pace was also added this time).

Other than the pace query (sure he wouldn't beat Judd over 20m but do we expect a rangy 193cm player to be able to?) I would actually agree to a degree on the other points raised, however don't feel they are permanent issues that can't won't be worked around.

Playing in defence everything is magnified - Pike beats Saddington is a few contests and his coach labels him as a major reason why his team lost, whilst at the same time someone like Hall was beaten in many contests by Michael and the play just continues - it doesn't come under the same scrutiny.

The suggestion that C.Bolton is a better CHB than Saddington is a subjective one, however is only based on one season in which Bolton was beaten more often than many people seem to realise.

I think it is relevant that Saddington hasn't had bags of goals kicked on him - sure 3 or 4 can be as significant as 6 or 7 in certain games, but it's not as though we have a guy who gets 8 kicked on him every second week and is seriously letting us down.

Also relevant I would suggest is the fact that two fairly knowledgeable footy people have played him in defence for 112 games. Yes it would appear this may change in the s/t to bring back his confidence, but I still feel the plan would be for him to return to defence soon, rather than finding a whole new position for him as such.

I also query how well thought through some of the alternatives being thrown up are - if he lacks speed and is somewhat unaccountable then he'd get carved up by HF flankers or wingmen.

Every time Saddington's name comes up he gets some criticism which is fine, just as he gets support from me which is also fine.

I'm happy to leave it at that (until his name comes up again in the future of course ).

I think that is a pretty reasonable post Steve. I don't think Saddington will make a really good CHB [which of course will be subjective to some degree as well] and you do. If I'm wrong, then I'll be happy to admit it as then we will have a really top-rate CHB, which can only be a good thing.

You're right in that I did add the pace issue as a recent one. I'd never really noticed it before looking at some replays of recent games, and noticed he did not seem to keep up so well with his man or look particularly quick. This may be a result of his knee injury last year though. A few people other people have commented on his pace too. I'm still not sure on this one, as being a tall loping player, a bit like DRJ, it may just appear he's not quick.

On Hall, I was quite critical of his game, as he didn't seem to play with his head and didn't mark well, although also wasn't helped out by some of the I50 delivery. Still, it is a lot easier to point to outstanding games by Hall.

To some degree, you're correct that backmen do get reviewed more harshly than others, because their mistakes have more dramatic consequences and their great games aren't always as obvious. Nevertheless, I still stand by my view of Saddington's weaknesses in defence.

As for Bolton, I don't think he's our answer at CHB either as he's too small and I agree that he was beaten during the year too. However, I think he performed better in that role than Saddington.

If Saddington could learn to correct what I see as his faults then I think he could make a good HBF/sweeper type of player. To make a good CHB, then I think these things would have to be improved relatively more, which I think is a big ask.

I'm happy to leave it there too - let's see what happens over the next year.

Are you querying my comment on Hall marking? He is not the best overhead mark going around - he frequently doesn't seem to have the co-ordination to take a mark in his hands over his head. Very good chest mark though.

My follow up post on BigFooty was clarifying what I was referring to - his overhead marking. I've made the comment quite a few times on this forum that Hall's overhead marking is not as good as it could be - he seems to struggle to co-ordinate his hands on occasion. Other people have also noted that. Obviously I wasn't clear in my first post, although given it was wet and slippery, marking problems usually refer to overhead marking. I clarified in my follow-up post - what's the problem?!?

But obviously you have no interest in doing anything but reading whatever you choose into what I have said, so if the constant abuse makes you feel like a big man, good on you!!
