The Bulldogs moved their game to Sydney because they were losing money playing it in Melbourne. Sydney pay them $$$ to play their home game at our home ground.

Were the Swans to end this agreement, the Bulldogs would no longer get this $$$, and the situation whereby they lose money if the game is played in Melbourne would probably not have changed.

They would then look to play the game elsewhere, such as the NT. If they can get this supported by the AFL, they may not lose money on this game, and thus it would be more lucrative than playing the Swans in Melbourne.

So the game is played neither in Melbourne nor Sydney. How fantastic for the Swans.

this might be something new to kick it on again- Swans stop paying the Bulldogs for the home game in Sydney. Bulldogs become even more broke and relocate. 5 games in Melbourne. Same for Kangas.

On another point, who pays for travel and accomodation of the players/coaching staff/assorted admin staff to away games? The club or the AFL?

I am using this fine print to give myself an easy out that I will make up later.

The AFL pays for the travel and one night's accomodation - normally the day before for an afternoon game and the day after for a night game. If clubs want to spend longer in their location they pay for it themselves.

This has been highlighted this week with the plight of Melbourne who wanted to travel up here tonight so they got a chance to train at TS but couldn't afford to do it until a sponsor kicked in $4000.

Ahh that's what I thought. It was actually the case of Melbourne that made me think of it. They are not doing well if they didn't have the $4000 available within the clubs coffers (not having a go at them, just sad for MFC).

I'll say this much though. It must be bloody murder to be 1 full month into the footy season to have to wait for your 1st game of football. I mean Melbourne members have to pick up their red members' caps next weekend against Essendon! (No wonder Ando is up here this weekend!!!!)

Things are made worse by having to play in Geelong this year Charlie. Replace them with say the Pies or Sainters and we'd still have 5 matches in Melbourne. Move the Bullies match south again, and you'd have 6. 6 is OK I think, 7 would be great for you. But whether the AFL would want the Swans having 7 matches in Melbourne as opposed to big crowd-drawers between traditional Victorian sides is highly debatable, and stupid on their behalf.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again. We are the away side when we play North. If North Melbourne want to play a home match on Mars to attract new member-like creatures, we as the away team really have little say in it. And with a sister in Canberra who gets to see her team once a year at best, I thought you'd understand what it would be like for a supporter like her or Llewellyn. (Hearing the ground annoucer call them "Canberra's Kangaroos." is even more laughable-they had about 20 people in the main stand, their cheer squad and nothing else at Manuka!!!)

You at least have 5 games in Victoria. Plus a couple of practise matches as well. Try being somebody like Annette in Brisbane. She gets to see her team only once a year. And generally has to watch us lose as well.

As much as you hate it, there ARE still people in a worse-off position than you sometimes mate.

PS:- The question has to be asked though. If we had a guaranteed 6-7 matches in Melbourne, how many more new members would we attract?

They could easily have borrowed 4 or 5 Range Rovers, stopped off at Lake Jindabyne for a a champagne spa and wine sampling, and made it to Telstra Stadium in time for the match tomorrow.

This is absolute crap mate. We have been made promises in the past by both the AFL and the club that we would get our fair slice of games in Melbourne. Brisbane promised the exact same thing when the Roys went up there. I don't think anybody is keeping their promise and i'm getting pretty damn sick of it.

Brisbane never promised it - they had it contracted!!! It was done when the AFL was desperate to a)get rid of Fitzroy and b) give QLD's AFL team a better nickname than the Bears lol.

The AFL would never sign a deal with the swans like that!! Unfortuatnly it seems all the original promises were done when South become the first 'interstate club' (when I was 5 years old!) and are impossible to keep now. Who would have thought to make these things 'law' when we were the only club playing games outside Vic.

Even though, I can't see why 6 games isn't easily achievable as discussed in this thread!!! and I think will happen next year when as rumoured the bulldogs game returns to Melbourne.

My sentiments exactly JF. After reading that para I have forgiven you for calling Canberra a sterile city. North are very happy with the way things are going with the games in Canberra . They are pulling money from the AFL and the ACT government and they now have 1100 local members here. But the majority of attendees were Swans supporters by far.The Swans have for many years had a very strong group of supporters in Canberra.

No comments from me on the games issue as it has been done to death.

1st point - 'genuine' is a debatable word, mate. What is 'genuine' about support that goes along the lines of 'we understand how you feel, but...' followed by excuse after excuse for inexcusable slaps in the face? You probably don't realise it, but you've done much the same thing. You've told me how you support my argument, then told me I should be thankful for 5 games. I know you - or anybody else in this thread - don't intend to do it, but you do it all the same.

2nd point - Exactly right. What makes the 5 games worse is that 4 of them are in the last 9 rounds... at least space them out a bit! We are forced into feeling incredibly remote from what is happening, and when we are on the verge of something as special as I believe is happening this year... you can understand me wanting to be involved.

3rd point - Yeah, six is a start. Seven should happen at least once every two years... there is absolutely no reason why it can't happen. But six? Well, it's better than five!

4th point - I've said it before, and I've said it again. This argument doesn't hold up. I refuse to believe that Sydney is THAT powerless about away fixtures. It's bull****. As for my sister, she'll end up seeing nearly as many games as me this year through her trips to Sydney. In fact, if she buys a 4 game pass like she's thinking, she'll see as many as me. People in those markets do not have the economic, historical or practical arguments that justify them receiving matches ahead of Melbourne.

5th point (the PS one) - Give the people a reason to sign up, and they'll sign up. Generally, I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that at least half the people at each game are members. On that basis, doubling the membership here to 8,000 is by no means a conservative estimate, IF there's matches to attract them and value in a membership. As it is, if you miss one game, the membership will cost you more money than buying at the gate. Miss two, and you're basically signing up as a charitable gesture. Can you blame people for dropping off?
