As for cheering and yelling, I think it depends where you are sitting. Down on the fence you expect it constantly and loudly during the game. In the stands then I think some is good (and necessary to an extent) but not over-the-top. I like the chants, although don't often participate, and don't mind the singing (but don't really care if it is there or not - love it in the soccer though). However, it's probably less suited to AFL than to soccer because of less 'dead time.' Still, AFL is becoming more like soccer with the control of possession and kicking sideways and backwards, so maybe there could be more opportunities for singing...

Actually with all the ball ups these days, footy is getting more and more unlike the world game. You watch a match from the late 80s or early 90s and the game had such a flow. These days all the attention to the defensive aspect of the game means that players spend more time in packs, more time fumbling it, less time in open play. But yes, the pace of the game as opposed to soccer leads to less time getting songs and chants going. Hence we often sing them after goals.
Anything is better than just chanting "Sydney!!!" and Sydney Sydney Sydney Oi Oi Oi" after goals like monotonous and unoriginal drones. The Australian sporting culture sure has a HUGE way to improve.
Still we are still heaps better than North Americans in terms of getting the crowd chanting in unison. At Montreal Alouettes CFL matches all they chanted was "Go Als Go."
