I like the chants, although don't often participate, and don't mind the singing (but don't really care if it is there or not - love it in the soccer though). However, it's probably less suited to AFL than to soccer because of less 'dead time.' Still, AFL is becoming more like soccer with the control of possession and kicking sideways and backwards, so maybe there could be more opportunities for singing...
There are definitely times when to start up a chant and times not to. When there is a bal up near the goal square I always try and get something going. Because it is here that the players can hear us and put that little bit of effort into things.

Actually with all the ball ups these days, footy is getting more and more unlike the world game. You watch a match from the late 80s or early 90s and the game had such a flow. These days all the attention to the defensive aspect of the game means that players spend more time in packs, more time fumbling it, less time in open play. But yes, the pace of the game as opposed to soccer leads to less time getting songs and chants going. Hence we often sing them after goals.

Anything is better than just chanting "Sydney!!!" and Sydney Sydney Sydney Oi Oi Oi" after goals like monotonous and unoriginal drones. The Australian sporting culture sure has a HUGE way to improve.

Still we are still heaps better than North Americans in terms of getting the crowd chanting in unison. At Montreal Alouettes CFL matches all they chanted was "Go Als Go." LAME!!!

What make you think your right and that what I said so wrong??? I'm entitled to my opinion of where to sit at the footy and you yours. I believe that I've learnt more from sitting behind the goals than on a wing. Thats just me, as to everyone else, well each to their own. My opinion doesn't make me right and everyone wrong, yet somehow your opinion does. For 10 years now, I have sat with the Cheer Squad behind the goals, I enjoy my football sitting there. I like to yell out and support the team, why this is a problem with you when you sit no where near the CS is beyond me. Oh thats right, you are looking for any old reason to personally attack me. [/B][/QUOTE]

Robbie, play the ball and not the man mate.

I disagreed with what BBB had to say, and wished to counter his arguments with my opinion, not personally slanted insults.

BBB has overstepped the mark in calling us halfwits etc etc But if that is his opinion, there is little I can do to stop him thinking that way, apart from meeting him personally and givng him a greater understanding of the efforts people like myself and yourself put in Robbie.

This forum is for discussion. If you think somebody is saying something dumb, say that WHAT THEY ARE SAYING is wrong, not that they are idiots for saying what they had to say (if you get my drift).

BBB, if you do have issues with anything either I or Robbie and said here, please send me a private message to resolve it once and for all. The same goes for you Gunn.

Apologies to the rest of you for having to make this post.

Not sure about his membership, but he is 89, almost 90.

He was definitely a member in '33, so that would give him 71 years membership, and I'm sure he was a member before that, so you could be right.

He is the oldest (and longest) known Swans member.

He tells this wonderful story about meeting his wife. He was dating her sister before the war. When he came back from the way, he asked his wife to be out and suggested going to the footy. She said, OK so long as it's the Swans, so he thought that it was a match made in heaven. They both were members and attended the footy for years, until she died a few years ago. Then he stopped coming, but his daughter in law and son bring him every so often.

Yeah, just heard that on the news too.

Pretty good news for him and the Dees considering how bad it looked on the night.

The surest way for the club to go broke is to continue playing games at Homebush that draw less than 45,000 (the approximate break-even figure at that ground).

The club would have lost a fortune on Saturday night.

At last someone has noticed what Saturdays crowd actually equates to !

Everyone is so quick to point out the big crowds (even though the money has gone to the AFL and not the Swans !)

Let me highlight this stupidity again

                      BREAK EVEN CROWD 45,000

                      ACTUAL CROWD 33,000

                      Shortfall 12,000

                      Conservative average entry price $20

                      SWANS LOSE $ 240,000 !!!!!!!!!!

We only make money at the SCG and lose lots and lots and lots at the Western farce !

Oh but i forgot we would not have got 33,000 at the SCG and that is all that matters !

Not sure it is quite that straightforward because many of the seats are sold ahead of time in the form of memberships. Assessing what a 'break-even' attendance is must include an estimate of how many members are included within that figure.

Having said that, they would almost certainly have made a loss on a 33,000 crowd.

Not forgetting the actual loss! Who can forget that.

Umm, there looked to be more than 33,000 there on the night but thats irrelevant.

I think that we weren't helped by the NSW Brumbies game at the SFS dragging some of our fairweathered friends away.

It's a shame but I have to question the drawing power of the opposition (Dees) which might be irrelevant in Victoria but very relevant for an interstate club.

Lets face it, Stadium Australia games need to be hyped up and the Barrassi Cup and the Melbourne Demons are not a big enough card to play at S.A.

My understanding when this was sold to us initially was that the hiring fee of the venue was directly linked to attendance, i.e. $x per attendee. Closing areas off like the top deck on the far side obviously reduce the costs further. I am not sure where this B/E figure of 45,000 comes from.

I thought the crowd figure would have been more. I also thought the atmosphere was pretty good.
