Firstly, thank you Bart, couldnt have said it better myself.

Second. Yes, RWC got great attendances, not just because of it being rugby, but because it was an event. But, have a look at attendances for the other tests since 2002:

        2002 - 64,703 vs France, 79,543 vs NZ
        2003 - 63,688 vs Wales, 82,096 vs NZ
        2004 - 56,143 vs Scotland

And think of the ticket prices for those games, on average about $100 or more.

Super 12 games average about 30,000 at SFS, and would draw bigger crowds for some games if relocated to Homebush, e.g. Brumbies or Reds. And it doesnt matter about how well the Waratahs are performing.

Anyone who doesnt think Rugby is doing very well is seriously deluding themselves.

Thats the only game any melbourne RU person will see all year. Not selling out reinforced the fact that the RU WC did little for rugby in general.

They were heavily promoting the 4th Super 12 franchsie as well. Super 12 itself was made for pay TV preventimg Channel 7 from showing it at a half decent time. Be interesting to see if the next TV rights copies the AFL model with a pay and free to air partner.
Next TV deal with RU looks like being severaly downgraded. Super 12 wont rate on FTA TV, no matter what. That has been proven.

The Waratahs dont need any hype. Constant huge crowds over the past 4 years, and will always beat the Swans head to head if we play at the same time. 2 million people attending RWC can't be wrong.
Several million attended the olympics. Does that make us track and field fans ? No.

Warratahs are doing no better than the Swans did in the late 90's. Its a Sydney phase.

AFL's strength is its insularity. The national team doesn't have any real opposition. Internation Rugby League is a non-event too, hence club and state of origin will always be more popular, but give a sport a truly global stage, like rugby and of course the national team will always be the focus.
RU claiming "globality" always erks me. There are 160 countries in the world, and only 1 of them is RU the No.1 sport. The fact that we can have 1/2 of 2 states remotely interested in it, and still be best in the world says heaps.

The AFL are equally to blame for the situation we have this Saturday night. They did sit down with the AFL but a compromise could not be met. But in the big scheme of things the ARU would barely blink. This match will be seen by tens of millions worldwide.
Rubish. The ARU did the fixturing AFTER the AFL draw was annouced.

I hate code bashing, there is room for all IMO.
You may not be code bashing, but you are artifically inflating the tyres.

The valid point i read in all this is rugby union is great and popular internationally. But super 12 isnt exactly that popular or great..... i cant remember where i read it.... but its about as popular as pura cup cricket (which isnt that bad)

Id say theres room for all codes... but afl is australias game! :P

Your opinion fine. Still on a long weekend when every Melbourne AFL team was playing in Melbourne, its a big crowd.

Super 12 has never ever been shown live on FTA. So, not proven. 7's right allow it to show the game 1.5 hours after the match has finished. As well as that the Melbourne test rated higher in Brisbane and Sydney than league head to head which is a huge result. The TV market has changed substantially since the deal was originally struck. AFL was the last big deal. Look at Foxfooty, they ditched pay-per-view and made it part of the package because subscription was terrible. No way Fox will foot the same bucks next time

Went to the SF and Final of RWC. Best sporting event I have ever been to inc 3 AFL GFs. I never said global in terms of soccer, rather AFL and League.

Touche rubbish. Like the ARU sit down and say "lets get the Swans". If they studied the AFL fixture why then would they schedule Scotland in Melbourne on a long weekend when every Vic team is playing at home. Besides going head to head on TV will hurt them in the Southern states

each code has the right to chase after the fans and the dollars

Fox Footy was brought into the normal package to make Foxtel Digital more attractive, the additional cost for subscription services was actually generating a lot of additional cash for Foxtel, plus resulted in a lot of Optus customers in Melbourne transferring to Foxtel (before Optus were allowed access to Fox Footy).

They decided to simplify all packages last December to ensure that there was no confusion for new subscribers. (My friend is an accountant with them!)

Fox might not foot the same amount of money in the next round of TV Rights, but they aren't going to be as important this time around. Its expected that the AFL TV Rights will go for $150 million a season up on last time. While most codes around the world have seen TV money drop, the AFL has the added bonus of having Channel 7 willing to pay whatever it takes to get the rights back, so expect an even bigger deal.

All evidence points to the AFL next rights being significantly higher. Ch 7 are making huge overtures to AFL, and only today werent interested in chipping into the Johns affair because "we only have 18 months of RU TV rights left". If they dont show it, who will ? Ch 7 will make a big play for AFL rights coming up.

News Ltd took a big punt on S12 when he brought the rights. Simply to get Pay TV off the ground. It cant rate in FTA, so will always be a pay TV sport. Now that he has all the other sports, his interesting in RU is diminishing. The next rights will be signficiantly less, reflecting RU position in Australian sport.

Clearly not, but then Olympics had no legacy for these sports. SOCOG shut up shop after the games, but the ARU is still here.

But almost identical in state to where it was 2 years ago.

Rugby has never been in the spectator sport landscape in Sydney. If you cast your mind back the swans had many years of sell-out after sell-out.

Went to the SF and Final of RWC. Best sporting event I have ever been to inc 3 AFL GFs. I never said global in terms of soccer, rather AFL and League.
Obviously you like RU. Any claim of "globility" over AFL and RL is no claim of "globility" at all.

I dont mind rugby - the game. I dont like its soul-selling culture or bull@@@@ opinion of its self. For you to spruke it here, implies you are far more one-eyed than you'd like to think.
