    Mark McVeigh

For those who saw the program Tony Squires 110% sports program on TV last night - would have seen a very home sick boy in Mark Mcveigh from Essendon.

The guy was an avid Swans supporter as a kid, and said ( not in so many words ) that he still holds ambitions to go back to Sydney and play for the Swans.

I believe he wanted to go to Sydney last year, but a suitable trade couldn't be finalised.

Thus he only signed a 1 year deal this year, and make no mistake, once again he will request to be traded to Sydney through the trade period later this year again.

So the question is not if he is coming to Sydney, this is quite obvious - he dearly wants to, the question is what you people here think would be a fair trade ?

My work mate is a very knowledgable Bombers supporter - and he believes McViegh currently makes a great defender, but would not make a good midfielder. He is only 23 maybe 24 at worst.

IMO - We should play hard ball IE Nick Davis situation - as we are in the drivers seat, and Essendon really have no say as McViegh wants out of there.

However we don't really need that type of defender, I'm hoping we can turn him into a midfielder if he came to the Swans.

Very interesting trade period coming up....

I saw him too. He sure seemed pretty positive about heading back to play for us.

To be honest I don't know enough about him, after from the fact that he is a left footer.

Norris Lurker (and others), what is the go on the guy? Where does he play best?

if we remain in the box seat he is worth going for. However i dont think we should chase after him or trade too much for him

This bloke gets a bum rap from a lot of Swans supporters.

For his size, he actually is a very physical player and has a bit of niggle about him. Not the quickest bloke going around, but you would think he would have his brothers stamina so playing in the midfield or wing is an option.

His field kicking is very very good.

While a spot in our defence is probably not available at present, it does give us the option of using Tiger, Crouch and Matthews more in the midfield.

Would be a very promising trade for a middle to late second round pick.

          Agree with most of this.

He is a good back pocket player, not really a midfielder.

The Bombers haven't played him in the midfield and that's a worry as their midfield is pretty average.

Would be a handy pick up for a late second or third round pick.

Not the type of player we really need at the moment with Bevan, Crouch and Fixter able to fill that small backman role.

why dont we recruit crouchys brother then and have a super fast player and barry halls brother :P

nah i get your point... just thought i can run 5k a night but my brother cant get to the letterbox without collapsing

i think mcveigh would be ok if we got him cheaply but hes not what we need to chase after

We do have enough of that type of player but if Bevan can be moved into the midfield as an in and under player maybe it would be worthwhile as long as we don't give much away to get him.

Good enough to bring home for the right price.

See what Sheedy wants and then decide, might be win win, might even form part of a bigger deal...

Ok, let's be realistic about the value of draft picks.

Mark McVeigh is much more likely to give us good value than, say, a pick in the high twenties/low thirties. Draft picks are radically over-valued. People tend to underestimate how much 'value-adding' can happen when a bloke has played five years of footy under a great coach with a great leadership group.

If we snaffled the same deal as we did with Davis, straight swap of a 2nd round draft pick, it's worth doing. Even if he adds nothing more than a bit of flexibility with Crouchy.

I'm not rapt in McVeigh as a player - I still think he's a bit soft, but if the deal is right, then the deal is right.

I agree we have lots of guys who would play similar positions to where he does for Essendon, but many players get traded to other clubs and then make a bid step forwards. Look at Craig Bolton and Barry Hall for us, even Willo and Schauble were nowhere near as good for Collingwood as they have been for us. Plus there's nothing like a bit of passion to get the best out of a player. Mark would have that in spades.

The other thing is, if Fosdike really is on the outer, then is he fair game for a swap? Essendon lack speed big time in their midfield. Fosdike's best attribute at the moment is his speed. If we were to make such a trade, I would expect a draft pick (2nd or 3rd round) packaged with McVeigh for Fosdike. Note that I am only suggesting something. In reality, I would prefer not to lose Fosdike.

2nd round draft pick for McVeigh would be nice, a la Nick Davis.

I thought that too, but the last couple of seasons he has really toughend up, he has become a real hard nut now, watching him running around of late, it has been quite impressive.

I would try for him. He wants to play for Sydney and to come home. We have other similar players but with our injury record half of them probably won't be available at any given time and it doesn't hurt to have competition for places. He would be in our best 22, he was a first round draft pick and a swap for a second round pick would be fair. It would also be nice for the brothers to play together.

Definitely take him. For one he WANTS to play for Sydney. He is experienced. You guys keep saying he is soft (you sais that last year, too) but I think the absolute opposite. His skills are about the equal of Fossy IMO, ie occasionlly great but very inconsistent. I would rather not lose Fosdike (even though I have bagged him a lot this year). I think he would still be a very handy contributor in the forward pocket. He's a much better goal scorer than M. McVeigh, too.

What I would really like to see is Crouch playing midfield. We need someone to take the number 1 small attacker, then so there would be room in the team for him (esp after Willo and Maxi retire) I want to see all the most highly skilled in the midfield...Schneider, Davis, Willoughby, J. McVeigh to compliment the solidity of J. Bolton, Kirk and Crouch.

I would say that his form of late hasn't been as good but this could very well be due to the fact that he's had enough of living in Melbourne.
I know his house was broken into recently as well so maybe a change of scenery would do him the world of good.

I would ceratinly like to see the two brothers playing at once. If he wants to come - great.
