It's not only up to Sydney - even if they were happy to continue paying for the game, if the Bulldogs didn't want to sell it any more then there's no sale.

How would we all feel if Freo and West Coast were struggling and Collingwood had the money to "buy" their Perth games to be played in Melbourne?

However, I will apologise for saying you made a "stupid" comment. No excuses for it - just a sincere apology.
I was fishing for bites with the whinging mexicans coment. Totally tongue in cheek.

I understand Melbourne supporters are happy and good on em. But they can't turn around and complain if we missed the 8 or top 4 by one game because we gave up our home ground advantage.

Nice of you to appologies. Doesn't happen on this board all too often.

One thing Im still unsure about is if its the Bulldogs who didnt want to renew the deal, or if Sydney turned it down. It makes no sense if it was Sydney, so therefore we didnt give up a home game at all - it was never ours to begin with.

didn't the afl step in about this? i remember a report a few (maybe 6) weeks ago that the afl had this match and the melbourne home game at the gabba in their sights.
if teams don't back themselves to draw a crowd they'll never survive on their own. i think the afl has to encourage teams to do as well as they can at home and address any financial short-fall through other means. though on the other hand, if the afl is preventing this from happening in the future, they must be pretty cold on the idea of relocating the doggies to sydney anytime in the near future.
i do feel for the low-drawing teams in melbourne; we've got the advantage of being the only game in town. every sydney-based genuine supporter of our opponent turns up because it's been at least a year since their last visit.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

I hope it does mean that we get to play another game in Melbourne and we aren't obliged to play twice in Perth, twice in Adelaide and once in Brisbane, because of the stupid way they do the draw.
                Bring it on!

I'd be there with bells on. Never been to Darwin.

Give me an excuse to get up there and check things out. Always wanted to do Kakadu and the like.

Hanging for a game in Tassie one day too. Want to do Cradle Mountain etc etc.

These are places I'd never go to if it wasn't for footy!

Let's face it, there are places you never go to, fullstop.

Darwin is a great place but a game there would wreck the teams for the following week.

                          Floppinab,

That is not correct, the problem is that if we get 6 or 7 home games in Melbourne and then have 10,000 to 15,000 members sign up (and not pay at the gate) all revenue from us for the game will go to us and not the Melbourne club.

Now that is good for us, but not for the Melbourne club so we might draw 15,000 paid up members but they don't get a cent.

This is why clubs such as the Kangas, Dogs and Tigers want home games against SnDon, Pies, Blues. They get a huge wad of cash from walk up and pre sold tickets for the large supporter base of the big clubs.

We saw this last year at Telstra Stadium when 10,000 of the filth kicked in for us and helped us make some cash.

Conversations I have had with club people, indicate that a large percentage of the Melbourne Memberships are passed onto the home club because the home club pays for the match to be staged and then takes the net profit.

I can't imagine any Melbourne club being happy about thousands of Swans fans paying nothing towards their home games.

I pretty much thought the same Damien, are you sure about what you said DST??? Your Collingwood example is not relevent because a Collingwood membership does not cover any rights to any other non-Collingwood home game whereas the Swans Melb. membership clearly covers entry (with certain conditions) to Swans games in Melb. (Vic????).

You are correct. I asked the question, but the club refused to say how much from each membership went to the Melbourne club, but you would assume it would be close to the GA price per match.
