Funny goal that. You could see his mind working through the options.
"I should pass it short 20m to someone in the F50 first, or maybe 20m to the side to someone in the open or give a handball off... oh oh what do I do, none of these are on... I can't possibly run on and have a shot... or can I... I think I can, I think I can... oh wow - how was that!!"

I think the main thing in the way of Ablett becoming a consistently good contributor is his self-confidence. If had the confidence of his cousin he could become a pretty good player. He probably won't ever be a star per se, but his long penetrating kicking ability could become pretty important to the midfield once Maxfield and Willo are gone.

I think the fact that his marker wasn't there also added to his dilemma

As soon as he kicked it though,I had no doubt that it was a goal.Very long accurate kicking.
ive always like luke and now thats hes playing so well my like for him has grown so much my boyfriend calls him lukey everytime i talk about him to tease me...

Only $1 for a cornetto that is DAYLIGHT SAVINGS!!!!!
I have been disappointed in him in the past but he certainly played well on the weekend. as others have said, he needs to do that more consistently.
he can seem to take forever to get rid of the ball sometimes, i guess that will improve if he keeps playing, but i wonder what his place in the team lookes like if we have no injuries? i think he would play off the bench a lot, even though stuff like his hesitation will only improve with game time....
i'm happy if i'm wrong if he keeps playing like that though.
One thing in his favor is his long kicking. How many midfielders we have who could consistantly kick over 50m? If he comes OK, he adds a dimension to our team.
No one that I can see has mentioned how Nicks added another dimension to our backline. Has pace to get to a contest, spoils well and reads the play coming in.
He didn't have a lot of "stats" but was prepared to get in and under, tap out when on the ground, got to some very important contests to spoil when the Bears players looked like gaining possession or a mark.
His ability to run out of defence and use the ball efficiently will be a real asset.
Thank Allah, Christ, Buddha, George W. Bush and the rest of them that we didn't trade him.
Very pleased with Nicks - very hard at the ball, plays good defence, aware of the ball and runs it out sensibly, a quality quick, and can also be shifted into the forward line.

Playing the best in the business seems to bring out the best in Ablett. I remember prelim final last year was probably the best he had played for us until saturday night IMHO

Nope because he didnt actualy get near the bloody ball, hes one of those annoying players who plays well when the team is going alright. And I believe that relates to the fact hes a confidence player who still dosent believe in himself.

I thought he kept us in the Carlton game single handedly.
