Anyone who bags Doyle is, I'm afraid, simply ignorant of the facts.
I have just finished an exhaustive analysis of the Roos match...here are the ruck stats. I have not included ruck or ruck roving free kicks in the stats, I am merely looking at effective ruck play, so, for example, when Maxfield was pinged for HTB it is listed here as a Sydney "first hands" but no clearance is recorded for that contest. First hands means just that, this includes a possession or a fumble. A clearance means an effective possession which either a) goes to a team mate or b) goes upfield and is not taken by the opposition.
Shots means shots at goal resulting from rucking contests.
I have also recorded who took what at every ruck contest and it is truly horrifying for Jude Bolton fans......9 occasions first hands on the ball for 1 clearance, 2 secondary bounces and 6 turnovers. A truly horror night for Jude included a miss on the run, terrible fumble under no pressure in D50 leading to throw in instead of rebound, poor handball contributing to the infamous 12 touch goal and one of the worst chips into the forward 50 you will ever see...25 metres down the line to 3 unopposed Roos. He also fell over after misreading a bouncing (errant) handball from Kirk in the centre...which resulted in a crucial Roos goal.
By way of comparison Daniel Harris had first hands on 16 occasions for 1 turnover, 4 secondary bounces and....11 clearances
Crucial error from Nicks which was the major contributor to the 12 touch goal...after handballing well to Barry in front of the sticks, Nicks did not shepherd King (or Stevens) and this was the reason as easy looking situation went down the gurgler. Crouch has 2 chances to kick long and there must be some blame out on midfielders not showing a marking otion down the wing. Doyle's error was not as bad as it looked, it was not a straight cough up, it was a perfectly timed bump from the Roo, nevertheless a big bloke like him should have withstood that pressure.
I also noted nearly every contribution Doyle made..... as follows
1 good contested mark
1 dropped contested mark (beautifully timed run to get hands on it...but spilled resulting in goal to Roos, I think)
3 times plugged the hole very effectively, spoils twice resulting in swift rebounds one goal to Schauble)
1 time McKernan took a mark on him...outside fifty as a result of fantastic kick
3 excellent pick ups of ground ball resulting in 1 swift rebound, 1 goal and 1 scoring shot
1 good contest in front of goal, perfectly timed leap, requiring Archer to leave his man....goal to O'Loughlin
2 lovely long kicks, one to the lead of Hall, one to Thewlis who should have been awarded a free (but wasn't).
For those who complained about Doyle "giving away stupid, important free kicks," you are wrong. He touched the shoulder which may be a free but is almost never paid......except against the Swans, it would seem. He recieved 2 frees himself as well as having his head nearly ripped of by TWO Roos in a ruck contest ain OUR F50 and not receiving a free. Completely incorrect free paid against Ball in our D50 as well, BTW as we were royally @@@@ed by the umpires for a change.
Doyle was the most effective ruckman on the ground by quite some margin, as these stats demonstrate.
