I know that people in Perth will not be happy, with the Eagles having been bumsteered a couple of times. BUT the AFL is well aware that is just CANNOT afford to piss off the notoriously fickle Sydney market, who as we know ARE starting to sit up and take a genuine interest in the club and to a lesser extent the game in general. I would love to Terror to have huge headings slamming the AFL. I think that would be enough to swing the AFL, ever wanting to develop the game to prospective Sydney-based sponsors and corporations.
Putting it bluntly, in this country when the city of Sydney gets a sniffle, the rest of the country catches a cold. Most businesses are based here. The city is the countries biggest income-earner by miles. Whilst sponsors and business will not dissert the West Coast Eagles and the game in the peripheral and small WA market if they don't get a home final, in Sydney they could very likely just think "Ah, that's just a Melbourne sport not interested in playing here. Stuff them!!!" And will go and invest in rugby union the NRL the basketball etc etc.
It is not about fairness to supporters in the outer that the AFL is reticent to neglect Sydney. It is because from a business perspective it is verging on corporate suicide. One foul move could destroy any respect the game has engendered over the years.
For this reason the AFL is correct in trying to push for a Sydney-based final in my view. We just cant afford NOT to have it in Sydney.
