I heard him say that too. Slight digression, but this is very interesting. The way he described the process and HOW he does it was interesting as well. There's no doubt he's a very astute bloke.

No, I'm not kidding. We need a quality midfielder and a quality tall defender before we need a forward, regardless of who that forward may be. A player of Reiwoldt's quality would put too much pressure on our salary cap. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see him in red and white, but its just not practical.

then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

We have nearly the perfect forward line as it is, nearly any club i reakon would do a direct trade of forward lines with ours, especially when they see it work well, like it did against essendon.

riedwoldt is going to dominant the afl for 10 years... who wouldnt want him... can play up the ground as well as forward!! but if stkilda let him go they are the stupidiest team ever

It's nice to fantasise about players like Crawford, Riewoldt, Koschitzke or Hayes playing for the Swans, but in the real world it's not likely to happen.

If Roos is still looking at picking up a ready made on-baller and/or defender, does anyone have any real ideas about where we could get a bargain?

To start the ball rolling, in 2003 the Dees were talking highly of Lamb and Ferguson as being potential top defenders of the future, but they've both apparently spent most of 2004 playing VFL (or injured?) and have been passed by Rivers and one or two others in the seniors.

Does anyone have any info about either of them, or whether they might be a useful pick-up? Or any ideas about other real trade opportunities?

                  Matthew Bode from Adelaide.

On the face of it he's similar to many of our other midfielders - ie tough but fairly small - but whenever I've seen him play he's shown a penchant for clearing the ball from congested situations.

There was a suggestion he might be trade bait for the Crows this time last year because he seemed to be on the outer at the club. I'm not sure whether this has changed with Craig taking over but I reckon he could be useful.

A second round pick or a fringe player and a later pick might be enough to snare him.

So where will this gun midfielder fit into our structure?Who will it be? Anyone have any ideas?

The way I see it, next year should see the midfield line up like

                    Tadgh Davis Schneids
                    Doyle J Bolton Kirk

That still leaves Willo,Ben Mathews,Goodes,Crouch,Stuey,McVeigh,Ablett,Buchy as pushing for selection in the midfield + Sunqvist,Willoughby,Schmidt and Scooter trying to get into the team.

Why do we need another midfielder?

Can anyone see the need for a ruckmen?

Doyle will be number one next year, then there is Ball with this year and maybe next left.

                    Goodes shouldnt ruck.
LRT is CHB apparently, but everyone seems to have given up on him
MeikleJohn if he makes it will take at least 3 more years, I think.
Erikson may not make it, but if he does it will be around the same time as MJ.

So what do we do? Recruit a midfielder to go with the many we already have? Or a CHB because LRT won't make it?

Or a ruckmen, because like Brisbane proved this year, you can never have to many ruckmen.

Ball needs to make a decision on his future of course. But we should be targetting young ruckman.

MJ has shown no reason to actually continue to develop him.

But the swans havent had much luck with ruckman in recent times
                      for instance:-
S.Carey, Sangster, Oconnor, O'Farrell, Feast, Rose (not gavin the other one)!!!!

I assume you mean Brett Rose
If he was a recruited as a ruckman it's no surprise he never played a senior game, the guy is no taller than me! (178cm)

why do people continually talk about players under contract?

and it was luke ball that thomas was talking about doing his contract at the end of the year not riewoldt. (he would be good) <--- understatement.

ray hall, justin koschitzke, nick riewoldt, lenny hayes, matthew scarlett etc etc are under contract. no point in talking about them.

I was under the impression that if a player is under contract, they can still be traded.

Very true!! Nick Daffy, for one, comes to mind. Richmond had to still pay part of his salary even tho' we had him!

So both clubs payed his salary in return for no service!!!
