If Ball is going to play on next year, where would we fit Simmonds into the team. Doyle may have to make way and that would only curtail his development.

Simmonds is pretty versatile and I don't think this would be an issue. He could play forward or back when not in the ruck.

Also, bear in mind that the Lions have four ruckmen on their list and all but one - the babe - has struggled with injury. It's pretty amazing that we had Doyle and Ball both standing at the end of this year.

I think if we are recruiting Simmonds as a ruckman, we have to play him there and not make him play as a forward for the majority of the minutes he spends on the ground.

The thing about Ball, Doyle and Simmonds is that they are all capable forwards.

So, in the unlikely event that all three are fit and firing at the same time, you have one in the ruck, one in the forward line, and one on the bench, and rotate.

One fact which has not been discussed so far is that if anything happened with Hall (suspension or injuries), we are in huge stride. No second key forward at all.

I think Simmonds would be a great acquisition. I'd play him at FF with Mickey to move into a pocket. With Baz at CHF, our already potent foward line would be even more dangerous. This also allows for more flexibilty and midfield rotations with Buchanan, Schneider, Davis and O'Keefe.

According to the Sunday Times Simmonds is happy to stay but is seeking more money and some more minutes in the ruck as opposed to his current role. Looks more like Simmonds is testing the waters and hoping to drive up his price ala aka, also said Hawthorn were very keen.

To play the FF position, one has to be either big enough, strong enough or fast enough. O'Keefe is neither of those. He serves well as the second/third option but I image he would struggle if he was given the leading role.

The problem with the SCG is that there is not much room more than one KPP but in a large ground, we definitely need two. To optimize our chance, the best option is to have a part-time KPP who is versatile enough to hold another role. We do need another tall who could play Key Forward + Ruck/Key Backman more than a specialist Key Forward.

Our forward is good but lacks depth. Options and qualities are thin after Davis/Schneider/O'Keefe/O'Loughlin and Hall.

Agreed, we saw what happened to the backline without our only proper defensive KPP in Schauble, the same thing would apply without Hall in the forward line.

I would go so far as to suggest that unless Roos believes James/Powell/LRT/Goodes(ha ha) is going to fill that KP role, then we need a Key Position player MUCH MORE than a midfielder or Ruckman.

Frankly I am NOT worried by our ruck stocks, for starters we get Ball for another year and frankly picking up a older ruckman is generally not all that big a problem. The number of 'discarded' big men that can summon up a crash hot couple of years at a new club is extremely long.

So Frankly I don't think Simmonds is all that good an idea.

What about after Ball retires after next year? I think we'd be silly to pass up such a versatile player in Simmonds. Currently, Doyle and Ball are not a real threat when resting at FF. Simmonds is a decent ruckman and very competent in the goal square.
