And Ottens has very good numbers in 2000-2002.

We have developed him from scratch. Possibly the only AFL player on any list at the moment that a club can claim to have developed from scratch.

Its no secret that he would like to finish his career back in Ireland playing Gaelic football ( his brother is playing in the All Ireland final on Sunday ). After taking time to settle in Sydney there is no way he would go anywhere else in Australia. If the Swans ever tried to trade him he'd pack is bags and head back home.

How would Ottens fit into our team ?

              His obvious positions are:
              1) Ruck,
              2) CHF
              3) FF.

              Hall would have CHF covered.

Option 1: In Ruck and FF rotation with Doyle. Both spend roughly 15 mins in ruck, 10 min FF and 5 min on the pine per quarter with M'OL filling in for FF when one is benched.
Where does that leave Ball ?

Option 2: FF and Forward ruck. Ball and Doyle share rucking duties, except in forward 50 where ottens takes over.
Would we be a bit top heavy ?

Option 3: Specific games he plays CHF and Hall FF with Doyle and Ball rucking to stretch vunerable defenses on big grounds.

No need to get too hung up on theoretical positions- Roosy doesn't! When Ottens is playing in the forwards, I would love to see him as the lug who can stand in the goalsquare (or 25 metres out from goal) to mark the big bomb into the forward line. This would free up Hall & O'Loughlin to do what they do best- be leading forwards. On this scenario, his role in the team would be totally different to Hall's, so they wouldn't get in each other's way.

For my money, the way to go is:
                * When playing a taller side- Ottens playing & rucking in the forward 50, and only going up the ground if the situation demands it. Ball & Doyle changing off the bench to ruck around the (rest of the) ground, as in 2004.
                * When playing a shorter side- say 'sayonara' to Doyle, and Ball and Ottens can work together. Whether Ottens sits in the forward line or on the bench when he's not rucking, depends on his fitness level & the way the game is panning out.

Of course, the more excited we get about it, the less likely that he'll come here!

I think you are overestimating what Ball can offer next year. He's getting long in the tooth, and will have to be managed very carefully. If we get Ottens, (or any other ruckman), I would see Ball used as a impact player off the bench only. So Doyle & Ottens would serve as rucks 1 and 2.

3 years is a long time in footy. Performances that far in the past should not necessarily be a criteria 3 years down the track, given his ordinary form recently.

Whether he was peed off at Richmond I don't know but looks lazy and disinterested to me. Believes his own publicity perhaps.

Would be close to one of the most overrated players of the last 5 years.

$500,000 for Ottens is obscene. We don't want another Kouta.

IF Ottens comes to Sydney ad IF he earns $500,000 he would probably deserve it.

there would be a lot of strings attached to him reaching $500K including number of games played, finish in B&F, finals, etc, etc. a lot of incentives.

Leo Barry? you star! We'll miss ya, ''Leapin''.

sounds like a performance-based contract is proposed. As I posted last night, I believed the decision would be made by the end of the week and that he was more than likely to go. I heard Miller interviewed this morning and he thought Sydney was counting its chickens. He mentioned that Sydney was less than professional in its dealings over Ray Hall. He also said that there is bad blood with the Swans going back to his Kanga days.

Sounds like sour grapes. He was a failed South footballer. Couldn't get a kick in stampede.
