Vicky Pollard: Oh my god I so can't believe you just said that this is like the time I threw Anita's nokia in the canal as a joke and she's like you have well got to buy me another one and I'm like get over it and then Paul came over who's adopted anyway and started saying that I fancy Mark Bennett but oh my god just because I have sex with someone doesn't mean I fancy them.

14 is a number close all of our hearts, but can I ask who has worn it before and I mean everyone who has, not just the more memorable players. This is an honest question not a rhetorical one.
We've been lucky to have a couple of exceptional players wear the number, but I think it was more luck than good management at the time of awarding it to the player.
As much as I think it should be revered, I'd hate to see it be a burden to the player who is eventually given the number. During the past two years I've read of a few names being bandied about to take over the caretaker of the Famous #14.
I say give to someone who lives and breathes the game, someone who will promote the sport to the kids of Sydney and NSW (sorry to our Melbourne family but we need to make it a 'Sydney' thing if it is to be special to the youngsters up and coming. They can learn it's history after they have been mesmerised by the player. You all know my feelings about our great South Melbourne history and I mean no disrespect to you or the previous players who have worn the number).
Let him make his own history. If he's a great player it makes the choice a good one, if not, it only makes the next one who is all the more special.
WE can make it a burden, lets just remember the good ones who made their own, and hope the future ones who wear it can follow in the same footsteps.
I'd prefer to see it running around and be reminded of, while not comparing it to the prior players to wear it. No matter how exceptional they may have been.
Here's my heart and you can break it

agreed. the pressure upon the next individual that wears it is not yet great enough. i don't want it out of the cupboard until it's bestowment will crush the individuality and spirit of the unworthy recipient.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

Nuber 14 is seriously in danger of doing that already, and that possability will alway be a danger when it comes to someone wearing number 14 in the future.

Originally posted by bigdaz Personally, I think #14 should be retired permanently. I don't think anyone can ever live up to the two greats who prevously wore it.
Keep it sidelined as a mark of respect for the two greatest ever to wear the Red & White IMO, Skilton & Kelly.
IMO it would be a shame to retire it because of two individuals - I'm sure both Skilton and Kelly were very much TEAM-focussed players, not giving much thought to their individual achievements. From the articles/stories around, it's clear that they both would have swapped every individual award they received for a premiership.
If Kelly was never given the chance to wear #14, he wouldn't have added to its "mystique". It's had plenty of time on the sidelines already - give it to a promising kid and give HIM the chance to add to history.
177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out.... Des' Weblog
