What a pity that the Swans have not done in Sydney what the Lions have in Brissy

No matter what the outcome tonight, but especially if the Swans go down by a long way, it is a pity that the Swans have not been able to take the mantle handed them and really excerpt themselves on the competition.
It seems that more people are turning to AFL through the Influence of the great northern team rather than the influence of the Swans.
I think that is a pity because surely the Swans are in Sydney to convert more people to Aussie Rules!?!
They can't be in Sydney to compete with the best because they never win any flags.
Maybe they are just in Sydney to make money and survive.
What ever the case maybe it is very disappointing when we consider the success of two other teams like Port and Brissy who have been in the AFL in their current forms a lot shorter time than the Swans.

Talking about culture, you have no idea how much more accepted the Lions and AFL are here. Channel 10 news had the Lions on first, then the Reds, then the Cowboys. Nothing about the Broncos at all.

I went into a sports store in the Queen St mall (and bought a ravishing Swans bucket hat LOL). The Lions and Reds stuff was right at the front (as admittedly was Queensland Origin stuff). The NRL stuff was right down the back.The Lions also have an AFL Shop at the Gabba. Sydney is the ONLY capital city to NOT have one!


They have a show on Channel 10 at 1:30pm called Queensland Rules. It shows all things footy in Queensland. One reason why I want Channel 10 to have ALL the AFL rights. Because they are willing to really get behind a code, unlike 9 & 7 who only use it for their own purposes.

AFL Footy up here is getting bigger all the time. The Broncos are very much on the nose, with lots of locals now supporting the Cowboys (lots of people in Brisbane are from elsewhere in QLD).

I'd say in 20-30 years AFL will be the biggest code up here, at least in Brisbane itself.

Sydney is a bit different to Brisbane in that we have 9 NRL teams as opposed to 1. And the sad truth is that many of those teams (Penrith, Bulldogs, Roosters) have been much more sucessful than the Swans in recent years. The swans haven't really given any borderline AFL fans a reason to jump on the bandwagon. We are consistent, yes, and make the finals every year, but that's just not enough. I've got no doubt that if we win the premiership 3 times running than AFL will become massive here too!

We have something similar in Sydney now (though I forgot to watch it today). Saturdays on Channel 10 at 1:30. It's called "Seriously AFL", and it's mainly just stuff about the Swans.

brisbane have won 3 and played in another grand final the last four years straight, that tends to attract supporters, the swans need to win a flag!!


plus of course there is more rugby competition in sydney and maybe brisbane people are more sports oriented!
